Chairman’s Newsletter – August 2016

Posted on August 30th, 2016

Hello everyone

Well, despite the crazy thunderstorms and soggy rides this weekend, the summer season has been going really well this year. Last Tuesday evening was particularly extraordinary as we saw no less than 66 riders setting off on the 5 rides from Old Mill Hall! That is certainly a record Tuesday for this year and as far as I know it is an all-time record for the club. The only bad news is that the summer is drawing to a close, the nights are drawing in and, amazingly, it is September later this week! I’m afraid there are only two more Tuesday evening sessions before the end of the summer season, so please do make the most of them.

A few things to bring to your attention:

NATIONAL RE-BRANDING NEWS
For some of you, particularly new riders with us, this won’t mean much, but the national organisation that we are part of re-branded from CTC to Cycling UK earlier this year. As mentioned in my last Newsletter and as you may have read in Cycling magazine, the national vote took place and there was an overwhelming majority in support of the re-brand. I think this ends any controversy and gives the leadership of Cycling UK a firm mandate to use the new brand to hopefully give leisure cyclists a stronger voice towards national and local government. As mentioned before, it doesn’t make any difference at all to us and our local activities, except that we should consider our own club name and branding. See below!

CLUB AGM – MONDAY OCTOBER 17th, 7.00: CHALLOW & CHILDREY CRICKET CLUB
A date for your diaries, this is our Annual General Meeting where we report on the club year (which runs from 1st October 2015 to 30th September 2016), elect a new Committee for the coming year and discuss any burning issues. As in the previous couple of years, we will arrange a fish and chip supper before launching into the business part of the evening. We do know that John Talbot will be stepping down as Rides Secretary and Richard Preece will be stepping down as Treasurer, so we are looking for some new Committee members to help us out in the coming year. Please give this some thought and let me know if you might be interested. Apart from this, we are expecting the main topic of conversation to be club naming and branding, in particular with regard to our club jerseys. See below!

CLUB NAMING AND RE-BRANDING
Again as mentioned before, we have been waiting to see how the national re-brand went and also trying to get a feel of how this might affect us locally before discussing what to do. We have a Committee Meeting next week where will look at all the options, one of which will be to carry on as just we are with the name CTC Wantage. Following this we will be in touch with you all to try to gauge opinion on a few options. One of the main aims of this exercise is to give ourselves enough certainty so that we can set up some new club clothing designs and make these available to everyone.

WINTER TURBO TRAINING SESSIONS
Over the last few winters, we have organised weekly turbo trainer sessions based in Old Mill Hall. These have always been popular. This is being planned again for the coming winter season, please look out for further details soon – we are just trying to finalise some logistics.

Thanks again to all of you, and particularly to Ride Leaders, for making this such a successful and enjoyable club to chair.

See you on a ride soon!

John Tranter
