Riders:Amanda SeddonAndy Cullen Angela Sanders Chris Walters Chris Wilder Dan Cox David Emms David Smith Des Higgs Frank Schroer Ginny Henderson Janet Charleston John Tranter Jon Seddon Liz Green Maurice Bawden Nick Dunton Peter Busby Peter Greenfield Philip Thornton-Evison Thomas Charleston Tony Smith Riders = 22 Report:They kept coming! In all, 22 riders set off on the 3* ride - such a big group we had to split it into two smaller bunches. A big welcome to Andy, Liz, David and Peter who haven't ridden with us before. John T led the advance party out, not able to substantiate his claims of going up the Tourmalet last week (OK it was in a car so doesn't count!) with a level of fitness to match.First incident where the second group nearly caught the first group between the Letcombes, when two very inconsiderate horsey types were riding in the road with 3 little dogs running around and not under control. The first group got away a little, when I remarked to Ginny about what a slog it would be up Hackpen against the wind. Going above and beyond the call of duty, Ginny managed to contrive a broken spoke almost immediately, and the wheel was most definitely not round, so Tony had a go at straightening it, before they limped home. After that we didn't see the first group again. After the slog of Hackpen (I had been right!) came the descent down towards Lambourn, with a little rain being felt, and turning more persistent as we climbed Seven Barrows. Following the Blowingstone plummet, we kept up a pretty decent pace back to Grove, apart from those who cut the ride short to go home. Top ride - it was amazing to see so many new faces, and to get so many people out on a 3* ride! | ||

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Nick’s Fat-Buster: A relatively flat route of 74 km, although a remarkable amount of the ride is slightly uphill – hence the name: won’t be much free-wheeling! Mostly good roads; there is one short piece of bridle-path to cross the A420 and the cycle-path between Abingdon and Sutton Courtenay. Only two significant hills: over Wittenham Clumps and the climb between West Hendred and Ginge. We’ll be aiming for a brisk average pace of c. 20 k.p.h. Refreshment stop in Abingdon or Didcot, depending on the pace of the ride. Should be back in Grove by 6.00 p.m. at the latest.Route: Grove, Denchworth, West Hanney, Southmoor, Longworth, Appleton, Cumnor, Abingdon, Sutton Courtenay, Appleford, Long Wittenham, Little Wittenham, North Moreton, South Moreton, Didcot, Harwell, East Hendred, Ginge, East Lockinge, West Lockinge, Grove. Nick Dunton – 01235-848580; mobile 07774-838310. |
||
Report:All went well - only mishap a wasp sting. Managed to miss the worst of the rain showers. Route as planned. Fat was busted. Cafe stop in Abingdon. Back by 5.00. | ||

Riders:Chris Carter BrennanChris Walters Henk Altmann (deceased) John Stamp John Tranter Maurice Bawden Steve Greene Riders = 7 Report:Driving over to Grove from Newbury, I'd convinced myself that there would be no-one else daft enough to be riding this evening - the rain was absolutely tropical. Slowly but surely though, riders trickled in, including two new riders, Chris and Steve - welcome to you both.The 2* and 3* rides were merged, promising to Henk and John that they'd be fine and that there were no hills. The sky was still dark and ominous, leading John T to comment that it looked like the end of the earth going on above the Ridgeway! We needn't have worried: the sun came out, and we had a very pleasant potter around the lanes, doing the 3* route at 2* (and a little bit more) pace, stopping only in West Hanney on the way back to talk about aeroplanes. Well done to Henk and John for "going the distance", and in such good style too. | ||

Chairman's Special | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:The idea of this special ride is to push 2* riders a little bit harder than the usual ride, but don't worry - no-one will be left behind! We will head out through Charney Bassett to Longworth, Appleton and Besselsleigh (bonus points for correct pronunciation on that one). Then to Wootton and the big climb of Boars Hill to see a) how the other half live and b) the distant dreaming spires of Oxford. Then a nice descent through Sunningwell to tea in Abingdon. After that we follow the Thames to the cunning bike track towards Sutton Courtenay, and home via Steventon. About 35 miles in total. |
||
Riders:Chris WaltersJohn Stamp John Talbot John Tranter Maurice Bawden Peter Busby Richard Preece Tracey Talbot Riders = 8 Report:Wow, what an eventful afternoon! The weather looked a bit dodgy as we set out, and we had a bit of rain early on, but it was OK for the big climb of Boars Hill (which everyone managed very adequately). The tea stop in Abingdon was Gia's Cafe, which is a slightly bizarre combination of traditional cafe and Thai curry house. We had the upper room laid out specially for us. Then, as we turned for home through Drayton and Steventon, the thunder started rolling and the rain starting coming down - just in time for us to get three punctures in quick succession! Unluckily, two of them were for John Talbot, and he had already had one earlier. So it was a very bedraggled return to Grove. All the riders did excellently. Welcome to John Talbot's wife, Tracey, out with us for the first time - quite an introduction... | ||

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 45-55km (30 - 40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of ~18km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.This month we are heading to the Shrivenham Village Féte for our refreshment stop. To get there we will cycle leisurely via Denchworth, Goosey, Baulking, Uffington, Compton Beachamp, Ashbury, Bishopstone and Bourton. After filling ourselves with cream teas, cakes, tea, coffee, pancakes and tapas we'll head back via Longcot, Fernham, Shellingford, Hatford, Charney Bassett and Denchworth. Apart from the little climb at Compton Beachamp this is pretty much a completely flat route of 35 miles. |
||
Riders:Adrian WestChris Walters David Smith John Talbot John Tranter Maurice Bawden Richard Divall Richard Preece Steve Boreham Ursula Hallam Riders = 10 Report:After the week's appalling weather it was great to see the Sun out in time for this month's ride even if there was a niggly NW breeze.It wasn't too much into our faces as we set off through Denchworth towards Uffington. Great views of the White Horse were had as we turned SE. The little hill at Compton Beauchamp didn't cause anyone any issues and we glided into Ashbury admiring the views of A new road for many of us followed through Bishopstone and the achingly picturesque village of Bourton. Shrivenham village féte was in full swing as we arrived and we had coffee from the innovative Carpucchino van accompanied by soft and fresh doughnuts from the stall next door. We spent about 40 minutes wandering amongst the stalls and watching the first heats of the tug-o-war competition. The ride back to Grove was smooth and helped by a tailwind we made good time and arrived at OMH about two minutes before the heavens opened in a brief but sharp shower. A really pleasant ride in beautiful surroundings and great company. | ||

Riders:Amanda SeddonChris Walters David Emms Des Higgs Ginny Henderson John Talbot Ken Pelton Maurice Bawden Peter Busby Peter Greenfield Tony Smith Riders = 11 Report:A very pleasant evening - the wind had all gone, so it was a joy to be out in the stall air. Ginny and Tony rode with us to Childrey and then peeled off to do some chores, while Chris and John held an impromptu freewheeling contest from the top of Fawler Hill. I reckon you can almost get to Uffington... maybe we should hold a club freewheeling competition?We had a jolly hour or so in the Fox. joined by Liz, Steve and Adrian from the 2* bunch, and Jon who'd ridden out to meet us. Arriving back at Grove in the dark, it was clear that newcomer Ken had not made it; indeed, he'd managed to follow Maurice some of the way back to Southmoor, until he realised the error and came back via the Hanneys instead! Welcome Ken - we don't often lose any riders... and we hope to see you again soon! | ||
