Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.Time for another Oxford special! This is a re-run of a successful ride I led last summer. This ride will combine some interesting routing into and around Oxford with a tea stop in a beautiful city centre location and a nice testing hill climb in the second half. What's not to like?! We head out via Hanney and Southmoor to Appleton and Cumnor. Down Cumnor Hill to Botley, then a cunning cut through to the lovely road around the top of Port Meadow to Wolvercote. A very special tea stop - we will pick up drinks and cakes in the best of North Oxford's cafes and then gain VIP entry to the beautiful St Cross College on St Giles. Then out of town south to Kennington, across towards Sunningwell and the big test of the day - the mighty climb of Bayworth Lane up to Boars Hill. Rewarded with great views back to the dreaming spires and an equally big descent to Wootton. Back through the Vale via Tubney, Fyfield and Charney Bassett. 45 miles at a good pace - 13mph or so. |

Riders:Adrian WestChris Walters David Smith David Talboys David Yearley Jody Plush John Davies John Tranter Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Mila Yearley Ursula Hallam Riders = 13 Weather:Report:What a nice ride! The weather was kinder than earlier forecasts had predicted - dry with a bit of a southeasterly breeze. A good group gathered and we met up with John D along the way. The VIP tea stop at St Cross College went well and Greens Cafe was a hit.The usual scrappy routing out of Oxford to the south and a couple of incidents with impatient motorists, but we made it back to the quiet countryside. But time had rolled on and we took the decision (as last year) to miss out the big climb up Boar's Hill. Clearly, this hill deserves a ride of its own! Back to Grove around 5.30pm. 45 miles / 72km at an average speed of 13.5mph / 22kph. The group stayed together extremely well and the ride was a pleasure to lead. A particular mention for Jody, riding her first 3* ride and clearly having no problems at all! | ||

Tuesday Evening 2* Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.This ride will be at the LOW end of the grade but still within it. Back to basics this week - actually the same route Andy used on the first Tuesday 2* ride of the season but (and this is the cunning part) - in the opposite direction! It's amazing how different a route can feel when you do it the other way around. A very warm welcome to any 1* riders who fancy a little stretch. The biggest hill is the Denchworth railway bridge (although to be fair we do it twice...). 15 miles at a very gentle pace. You'll be fine - go on, you know you want to! |
||
Report:One of those crazy times when you wonder if anyone will be mad enough to turn up. Of course they will! Four brave souls set off in the teeth of wild winds and looming shower clouds. Fortunately, the rain held of and we somehow stayed dry. The first half was wind powered and we all felt super-human. This was compensated for by the second half - grovelling somewhat into the howling gale.But - the group stayed together and a (relatively) good time was had by all. Thanks for your company! | ||

Leader:Ursula Hallam |
Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.This ride will be at the LOW end of the grade but still within it. Easy does it this week! *** Slight change to the previously published ride. *** As the 2* and 3* groups have both been up Hackpen in the last couple of weeks, I have changed the start to take us up what is called Seven Acre Hill on my OS map. I don't recall ever having cycled up this one but I'm told it's quite nice so let's give it a whirl. It still takes us to the top of Hackpen, so we will continue down the other side returning via the delightful Seven Barrows and a flat stretch home. |
||
Riders:Adrian WestAntony Cockerill David Smith David Talboys John Talbot Ken Pelton Richard Saunders Ursula Hallam Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Ok, so not exactly the relaxed, genteel introduction to 3* riding that I had envisaged…With the winds gusting to 50mph and heavy showers predicted by the BBC, a surprising number of hardy regulars plus new guy Antony turned out, all looking (even more surprisingly to me) madly keen. Although I had uploaded a flatter, shorter backup route into the GPS, we decided to stick to Plan A. So we started with a tough outward journey into the wind along the spring line road. Showers threatened but simply turned into a wind-swept rainbow as we fought our way up Seven Acre hill and seriously battled the wind down the other side of Hackpen. Turning into Seven Barrows road, it all became suddenly more delightful! Swooping down Blowingstone, and crossing over to Uffington, Baulking and Goosey Lanes were heavenly with the wind behind us, which just left one last section into the wind at Denchworth to bring us back down to earth. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed it, so thanks for turning out. | ||

Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours ride at a riding pace in excess of 24km/h (15mph). May be hilly.This ride will be at the LOW end of the grade but still within it. This is a bridging ride as an introduction to 4* for regular 3* riders. It will be above the top grade pace of 3* but not massively so. No one will be dropped. The route makes use of wide, fast roads so a good pace can be maintained. Basically flat apart from the gentle rise through Bagley Wood. Options to extend via Garford or cut out the Hanney/Denchworth loop towards the end if required depending on time |

But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Report:A ride of contrasts due to the weather:- Either struggling in to the wind, or gliding along with it. - Either big puddles, or blow-dried tracks. - Either dark threatening clouds, or riding straight into the sun ... but we didn't get rained on and we didn't get blown off course, managing to complete 3 climbs of the Ridgeway! Out via Crab Hill and Lark Hill and up to the Ridge. Down Ice Valley and back up to Betterton cross. East to Harwell campus and down the great whoopy hill. West against the wind and sun, and up Zigzag hill. West even more against the wind to Betterton Cross once more for another great blast down! Saturday morning off-road ride – from Goring | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Goring, Manor Road / Long Meadow (see URL) |
Description:Our monthly off-road rides for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy.These will be on the second Saturday of each month at 10am from various locations. They will be about 20 miles mostly off-road and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). The terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. |
||
Report:4 of us in all - Nick Smart from Wallingford joining us too.'A nice day trying to get out' was how the other Nick described the weather today. The sun did eventual break through the clouds, but more importantly it didn't rain. And we spent so much time on the twisty singletrack in the woods that we didn't see much of the weather anyway. The other defining feature of the ride was meeting up at several points with an Evans organised ride - these often have 200 riders - but they started earlier than us, so we saw mostly tyre tracks. In all, a thoroughly enjoyable Saturday morning. | ||

Devon Day One | 3* |

Leader:Nicole Pethybridge |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:TBA |
Description:A clockwise route from Smithaleigh South Devon through Ivybridge & Buckfast Abbey to Holne. Up onto the high moor via Hexworthy and west to Princetown. West around to Burrator, Sheeps Tor and Cadover. Back in via Wooter and CornwoodSome took a final loop to Harford and Ivybridge |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Smith John Tranter Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Ursula Hallam Riders = 9 Weather:Report:Nine of us; Andy, Katherine, Jon, Karen, John, Ursula, David, Richard and Nicole had convened at the Smithaleigh Hotel in South Devon. At breakfast there was a little concern with the water falling from the sky and several weather reports were compared to try to cheer us up and decide what to wear.Heading off for an anticlockwise route the weather had actually cleared and we set off in the dry. Within 5 miles we all realised that we had too many clothes on and after what was to be a relatively small climb out of Ivybridge we all stripped off a bit. Discussing the hills could take almost a long as the ride but needless to say we went up and down several times before a lovely long swoop into Buckfast Abbey. Here we met some Devon CTC members who were joining us. The extra 5 included Johnny (age 5) as stoker behind his Dad, Toby on a tandem and ably helped by his dog ‘Little Un’ in the saddle bag (See picture). Mum; Nikki and friends Andy and Simon joined the gang and we made 14 plus dog as we headed off again. The first of the ‘real’ climbs started through winding hamlets up to Holne Village Café. A wonderful little stop nestled in the hills with tea, coffee and cake provided by the community run café. Stoked up our family left us and the remaining 11 started the daunting yet wonderfully rewarding climb up onto the high moor. For a newcomer to the moor this is where the hamlets, streams and mixed woodland landscape gives way to bronzed moorland. With wide ranging views and granite Tors the effort is amply rewarded. Once on the top we continued with the ups and downs –yet of a more dramatic style all the way to the highest point on the moor –Princetown. Everyone agreed that normally a 10 -12 mile ride between coffee and lunch would have been thought a little light weight but not here and the lunch stop at The Fox Tor Café in Princetown was very warm and welcome. Stocked up again we rode across the top of the moor, waving at a few Ten Tors walkers and took the welcome swoop down westwards. This wonderful decent came with a challenge with a dead stop, left turn and step upward gradient in a reverse direction. Everyone managed to get into the right gear but a few did topple over at this point!!! Believe it or not yet more undulating and challenging little climbs we weaved our way to Burrator Reservoir and a beautiful moss and lichen laden lane below Sheep’s Tor. An easier section through Cadover with views of the sea and a long downhill to Cornwood rewarded the day’s effort. Here some riders decided they really hadn’t had enough of the hills and took an extra loop up to Harford and back round through Ivybridge whilst the rest of us took the final few roads back to Smithaleigh. A demanding yet rewarding all day ride of 51 miles for some and a few more for Richard, Andy and David. We kept dry and saw some of the wonders of our beautiful countryside. | ||

Family Picnic Ride - with stickers! | 1* |

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:11:00 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:A ride for families from Wantage that will explore the local area at a gentle pace, with frequent short stops learn a little bit about local geography and history. Will be 15 to 20 miles and not go too far from Wantage to keep 'bail out' options open. Please bring a picnic for lunch.I'll give the children a small map of the area we will be covering and at each stop will talk to them about a feature and give them a sticker to stick on their map. Route: Wantage Market Place Follow the NCN route east to: W&E Lockinge W&E Ginge (spring of the GInge Brook) Option to go up Hagbourne Hill if the group feels like it Harwell campus (probably have picnic here) Return by same route until turning off to Ardington (and the solar system) Option if group and time permit: past Lains Barn to pass Williams F1 ... and back to Wantage Note that children under 13 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Those 13-17 may ride unaccompanied if a parent or guardian has completed the Parental Consent part of the Guest-and Consent Form available via the 'Resources' tab above. http://www.ctcwantage.org.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Guest-and-Consent-Form.doc Free parking is available on Sundays in the nearby car park. |

Report:A very enjoyable ride - but a bit low on numbers.From Wantage Market Place we rode on the NCN route out to Harwell. On the way, we looked at many local sites of interest, starting with Alfred the Great in the Market Place and getting very up to date with the satellite dish and Diamond light source at Harwell. Stan was even happy to add on the climb of Hagbourne Hill to see the very of Didcot and the countryside beyond, before coming back down for lunch on the picnic benches at Harwell campus. We then went back to Ardington to see the Millennium Sundial and model Solar System, and via Lains Barn to Grove to see where the Williams factory was. Stan (age 11) really seemed to enjoy this and was happy to add stickers to the map that I gave out. Andy also seemed to enjoy the change from 4* pace, and the many traffic-free sections | ||

Leader:Nicole Pethybridge |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Smithaleigh, South Devon |
Description:Ride north from Smithaleigh through Hemerdon Heights. Down the Plym Valley to Jenny Cliffe and Wembury. Taking coast path to take the ferry across the Newton Ferres, up Membland along the coast road to Ermington, Ivybridge and back to Smithaleigh.Lunch - Newton Ferrers. Tea stop - Endsleigh Farm Shop |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Smith John Tranter Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Ursula Hallam Riders = 9 Weather:Report:The morning arrived covered in low mist but without rain and our legs weren’t too sore from the previous day. Angela (Katherine’s sister) and Steve, known to many CTC riders who now live in Devon joined us for the agreed ride. After the previous day’s exertion we decided to do a longer stretch after breakfast with lunch relatively early and a shorter section in the afternoon.So to meet this we headed north up through Hemerdon Heights (its in the name!!!!) but where rewarded with wonderful views over Plymouth Sound. The early climb was followed with the equal decent to the Plym Valley trail. Now nicely tarmaced and with a few statues of bicycling insects (weird but beautiful) As we followed the Plym into Saltram House National Trust estate where the tarmac ran out we joined a shared path. Negotiating Plymstock proved a little difficult (which for reference is pretty tricky by car too!!) Here the new bike path was great while it lasted but that wasn’t long and there was a little negotiating what would have been great on a mountain bike but not so good for slim tyres. Some dog walkers pointed us in the right direction and we emerged at Oreston Lake and climbed up to Jenny Cliff. Again a lovey view and some welcome public conveniences. Further climbing that was actually manageable and satisfying. Unfortunately the positive vibe was lost as Katherine took a nasty tumble on a dark, winding, steep descent. With sister, first aid kit and the loan of some leggings Katherine was patched up and very bravely carried on up to Wembury. The coastal path was found and the track followed down, down, down right to the extremely picturesque inlet. Here we flagged the ferry man and as a team managed to load the bikes in two ‘voyages’ across the little stretch of water. The second crew were given a little extra ride to catch sight of the deer, who had remarkably swam across the bay in front of us, heading off into the hedgerows. After our sightseeing we arrived at The Dolphin pub that provided excellent food and some of Andy’s favourite beer. The beer was very poorly resisted but it didn’t seem to affect too many legs as we left the comfort of Newton Ferrers behind us and headed up Membland. This was another climb that was wonderfully rewarded cresting the top and resting at a gate looking out over the sea. Now up on the headland we swooped up and down along a rolling road following the coast, then a lovely downhill to Ermington and a few more miles to a welcome cup of tea, ice cream and cake at Endsleigh Farm Shop in Ivybridge. The day wouldn’t be complete without the final little climb back to Smithaleigh and the weekend was done. Thanks to everyone for great company, resilience and bringing their climbing legs. 852m ascent 855 descent | ||

Report:The warmest day of the year saw 4 of us out and headed for the Ridgeway.We went up Crab Hill, which is nicely dried out in all except one place, then Lockinge and Goddards Brook. For a change we went straight up the 'Jolly Green Giant' hill. It's a sign of fitness improvement that all of us made it up there without running out of puff. I remember failing this not too many years ago! Then we went off the back of the Ridgeway down Ice Valley (with a short pause for John to fix a puncture). Up again to Betterton and we felt conditions were good enough to try the Ginge descent. I'm glad to say that this has improved a lot since autumn, and is now very rideable though stutter-bumpy in places. For a challenge we not only went down the bridge of doom, but tested ourselves going up it too. I smugly report that I was the only one who succeeded Then back via Lockinge and Crab Hill, where I caught caught in a rut. | ||

Description:Second running of this CTC Wantage event. The off-road sections in Marlborough and through Coate Water Park have been removed following several adverse comments last year. Route is now entirely on tarmac. To maintain distance, there is an extra loop through Shrivenham and the final 15km are flat and fast, in nice contrast to the rest of the route.Start: Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall, Uffington, SN7 7RA [OS 174 GR 306894] – ample car parking available – park on road outside if full. Sunday 17th May 2015. Start time = 9.30 a.m. Light refreshments will be available at the start, cakes and sandwiches at the finish. There were 92 entries, 17 did not start, and 7 failed to meet the cut-off time, making a total of 68 validated riders, including 23 Wantage DA members.Everything seemed to go smoothly - apart from the man who collided with the tractor! [He was unhurt.] The vast majority of riders were happy with the route and arrangements. Again we were lucky with the weather. We made a surplus of around £370. This will be donated to the Oxford & Chilterns Air Ambulance, as last year. Huge thanks to those who helped on the day, and those who donated cakes for the refreshments. Likely date for next year: Sunday 8 May 2016. Running an event like this does a lot to raise the profile of the DA in local cycling circles, and gives us an opportunity to promote our activities in the wider community. The skies looked full of rain and all the scary parts of the bible in parts, but this didn't put off the brave 2* riders.1* didn't have any riders probably due to the weather so Jon and Karen Townsin decided to join us. A nice flat ride with some very cold breezes in places. We were doing really well avoiding a huge rain cloud that resembled something out of the film Independence Day and then two thirds the way around the route another storm cloud crept up on us and we had a proper soaking! After the downpour we were rewarded with a fabulous rainbow once back over the A420 which made the soggy and cold return to grove much nicer. Thanks to all for coming on the ride and a very warm welcome to Allan on his first ride with CTC Wantage | ||

We agreed yes then Mr Schroer made it the FunBoy 3,so with Churchillian words of encouragement from the Club Chairman off we set.Amazingly we rode it perfectly, even together up Chain we did rolling lead outs all the way to Newbury, touching 30 mph a couple of times, all the way to Shefford and even the lumpy bit to Manor. It must be said Frank did do the biggest turns but I thought it was about time a Dutch cyclist did something this year but full credit the pacing from each was ideal, so thanks gents. The rain did get us at the end but that just upped the tempo to bring us safely home after 33 miles,450 metres of climbing at a good speed of 18.3 mph, no stress but a good stretch! Description:Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.This month we will ride out to Filkins for our tea stop at the Cotswold Woolen Weavers. The ride will be a little longer than usual at just under 60km but fairly flat with only one notable climb. This will give 2* riders a taste of touring without having to dive straight into 3* 100km+ rides. (which are great btw) We will head out from OMH to Filkins via some rarely used roads so hopefully some new scenery and a welcome change for regular riders. A good afternoons cycle touring at a 2* riding pace so expect to be back at Grove late in the afternoon. Come along it will be fun and the cream teas at Filkins are to die for UPDATE: I have contacted the tea stop and they are glad to have us visit. Out of courtesy I said around a dozen or so may be visiting. There is plenty of safe bike parking for us. |

A lovely warm afternoon with scattered sunshine encouraged a lot of the riders to attend, along with a good route and promise of an awesome tea stop. Due to the number of riders we split the group into two with group 1 being led by myself and group 2 led by our Chairman JT. An interesting route via Park Lane, Stanford, Hatford (where group 2 had a minor detour), up the rarely ridden Sandy Lane, Littleworth and a beautiful descent to Thrupp. I think this is where we lost David T in group 2 to a broken spoke according to the flyby. Thereafter both groups continued through pretty Cotswold Villages to our Tea Stop at Filkins where Brian left us and headed home. As soon as we parked the bikes and eagerly entered the tea shop it was evident that the poor lady working there hadn't been informed of our visit by the boss who I contacted previously. Unfortunately this meant that there was a shortage of cake and cream teas and a few people had to wait quite a while to get served. Over an hour later and an apology from the boss's wife we continued on our journey. Chris and Phil left the ride and made a hasty journey home due to needing to be back for family etc. and the rest of us carried on to Bampton past some Morris Dancers and then up the hill to Buckland. We continued on the well worn path through Charney, dropping various riders as they departed for home, through Denchworth back to OMH. A fantastic afternoon out with fantastic company. From Old Mill Hall we headed along the canal to Challow, and then up the hill to pick up the track towards Childrey. We headed up the hill where the track meets Silver Lane, to the B4507, and then a quick left and right to pick up the trail that heads towards Letcombe Bassett. From there we had a fairly straightforward run into Letcombe Bassett and then up Gramps Hill to pick up The Ridgeway, before heading westwards to the Wescot Chalky Drop, via Sparsholt Firs, and then onto Denchworth via the normal roads. Wales Weekend |

Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:New House Farm, Rhosgoch |
Description:A weekend trip to mid Wales to ride some classic passes and routes.The base for the weekend will be New House Farm in Rhosgoch near Hay-on-Wye. This will give us easy access to the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Black Mountains. It is a working farm with livestock in a beautiful quiet valley. I have stayed there on a multitude of occasions with my astronomical club to take advantage of some of the darkest skies in the UK. Two led rides will be arranged on the Saturday and Sunday, these will be long road rides and cross some tough terrain and will be suitable for fit and experienced riders only. But you are are welcome to still join us for the weekend and do some mountain biking, walking or sightseeing. UPDATE: both rooms at the B&B are now taken. Alternative accommodation can be found in the surrounding area but note that Hay Festival will be in progress. There is also a mobile home that would accommodate a few people. The campsite is £4 pppn and has access to basic but functional facilities, i.e. toilets and hot showers. It can take tents and small motorhomes, e.g. VW Camper, only. No caravans. The farm does excellent home cooked 3-course evening meals at £16.50 and for the campers a full breakfast at £7. There is self catering accommodation just down the road at Lane Farm but please make your own arrangements if you wish to stay there. The plan is to arrive on either Friday afternoon or evening (or early Saturday morning before the first ride leaves). Ride Saturday and Sunday and return Sunday evening. You are welcome to stay over on Sunday night and return Monday if you wish. We can have group evening meals at the farm on the Friday (if you arrive in time!) and Saturday. I will be firming up numbers for meals at the farm soon so if you know you will be joining us please let me know! |

Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Rhosgoch |
Description:Gospel Pass is the highest road pass in Wales and a classic climb by bicycle.All CTC Wantage riders are welcome to join us for the day. I recommend picking up the ride in Hay-on-Wye where we will leave around 9.30-9.45am. Please let me know if you are intending on doing this so I know who to expect. Those staying in Rhosgoch will take the undulating road to Hay-on-Wye where the climbing starts. A long and arduous climb firstly through forest and then open heathland with fantastic vistas on a clear day. A long descent follows through a wooded river valley, nearly all the way to our lunch stop in Abergavenny. The return leg is flatter but still fairly lumpy (there aren't many flat roads around here!) we will stop for an afternoon tea/coffee/ice cream in Hay-on-Wye. The ride is 108km with 1500m of climbing. A classic not to be missed. |
||
Report:Four riders set off from Rhosgoch on the 'easier' road to Hay-on-Wye to meet with David S and Ursula in the festival frenzy.With very kind weather (sunny but not especially warm) we set off for the big climb of the day up Gospel Pass. The lower half is tough, the middle section is very tough but the top third on the open moorland is actually the easiest bit and the most interesting. The views are stunning and the road is superb. After regrouping and taking a few piccies we set off down the other side. The first bit is steep and the road good but as it enters the trees the gradient lessens, the surface deteriorates and it gets very narrow. We stopped briefly at Llanthony Priory for a quick look around before continuing down to Abergavenny. After getting a bit lost and separated we eventually all got to Hoffi Coffi where we could sit outside and have a very pleasant lunch. Phil had the most enormous Club sandwich (basically a full English breakfast in several slices of toast), he says he didn't eat it all... The run along the valley past Crickhowell was very pleasant, we took a few stops to look at the canal before the climb up the A40 to Bwlch where we stopped for ice creams. David S And Ursula left us at Llangorse to make their way back to their digs. The rest of us had a very pleasant run down into Hay-on-Wye past the festival. We stopped in the town for a coffee and to watch the festival goers before tackling the climb back to base. This wasn't anywhere near as bad as I was fearing, a couple of steep sections lower down and then a steady 5-7% climb. A short 17% kick at the end into Painscastle. We deserved our three course home-cooked, home-produce meal that evening (and the several bottles of red wine) | ||

Start Time:9:30 am |

Description:Exploring the Brecon Beacons starting in the small town of Brecon. The ride will seek out river valleys, lakes and mountain passes.This is a 100km ride with substantial climbing involved!! All CTC Wantage riders are welcome to join us for the day. Please let me know if you are intending on doing this so I know who to expect. The start will be from the car park in Kensington (£2.50 all day pay and display). We will head out of town via NCN8 alongside the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal (tarmac surface). We will pass the reservoirs at Talybont to the outskirts of Merthyr Tydfil. There are several cafés enroute so we might stop to have a quick elevenses. Crossing the southern edge of the Beacons we will pick up the Tawe Valley where we will have lunch at the riverside Changing Seasons restaurant. After lunch we will climb away through the Black Mountains before dropping back towards Brecon where we can enjoy an afternoon tea/coffee if we can find somewhere open! NOTE :- I have a shorter wet weather alternative starting from Talybont. We can start later if the weather in the morning is poor http://ridewithgps.com/routes/8096120 |
||
Report:With heavy overnight rain we went for the shorter ride option from Talybont.The skies were overcast with a few spots of rain in the air as we set off after another cup of tea for David B in the café. The ride up to and alongside the Talybont Reservoir was very pleasant but came with a nasty shock as a 20% ascent up the head of the valley followed! That was tough after a hard day's riding the day before. We re-grouped at the top and enjoyed the descent down towards Merthyr alongside another reservoir and over the dam at the end. We passed the Brecon Mountain Railway with an engine in steam and entered the outskirts of Merthyr. A very undulating and unpleasantly busy section through Merthyr, Tredegar and Beaufort ensued. This route ran parallel to the Heads of the Valleys dual carriageway which seemed far less busy. Long ascents through housing estates with lots of impatient motorists. Not recommended cycling country. Eventually we turned 'inland' back into the countryside and very exposed and bleak moorland. Four of decided to extend the ride down the awesome descent to Llangattock and a well deserved late lunch at the Courtroom Café in Crickhowell. A very pleasant roll back into Talybont alongside the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in the sunshine completed a tough but rewarding day's riding. | ||

Description:A ride of just over 50 miles heading south from Wallingford, using some of the route from last year's Century Ride (some in the opposite direction). This is a ride I'm leading for the CTC Wallingford group; Wantage members would be most welcome to join us.The route will first climb into the Chilterns from Ewelme, pass through Checkendon and Woodcote before we drop down to the Thames at Whitchurch. After crossing the new toll bridge to Pangbourne, we will continue up the scenic Pang Valley to Bucklebury and on to Cold Ash for lunch at The Spotted Dog. We'll return via Frilsham, Hampsted Norreys and Aldworth descending Streatley Hill and returning to Wallingford from Goring via Ipsden. The ride will be taken at a steady touring pace of about 12mph; but be prepared for some hills. The ride is at the top end of the 2* rating and would suit those who are comfortable on a 2* Saturday ride and who fancy an all-day ride. There is free parking on a Sunday in the Goldsmith's Lane car park (OX10 0DS). |

Riders:David GreenDavid Talboys Des Higgs Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Mavis Rose Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Robin Tucker Steve Swanton Riders = 10 Weather:Report:The prospects were not looking good as I drove over to Wallingford in the rain. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a largish group of familiar faces sheltering under the town hall. We were 12 in all, mostly from the Wantage group but also Dave from Oxford City, Patrick from Wallingford and newcomer Kinnari (in training for LEJOG). By the time we set off over the bridge to Crowmarsh and past the sad, burnt-out remains of the SODC offices, the rain had stopped. At Ewelme, a few of us even shed cagoules in preparation of the climb up Swyncombe hill, our biggest hill of the day. Everyone climbed well and after a brief rest to take in the view, we were soon enjoying the flatter riding through the Chiltern woodlands.We stopped briefly by the green in Woodcote, before continuing through Crays Pond and on to Whitchurch, for the swift and steep (20%) descent down to the Thames. Once over the new toll bridge, we were in Pangbourne, where we said goodbye to Patrick who had an alternative appointment for lunch. We climbed out of Pangbourne on the Upper Basildon road before turning into Bere Court Lane to take us along the Pang valley. After a few ups and downs initially, the route settles into a very pleasant lane with hedges on either side and views across the valley on either side. We turned south through Stanford Dingley and after crossing the river turned right towards Chapel Row. This lane has a sting in its tail with a short but sharpish climb up on to Bucklebury Common. Having caught our breath, it was but a simple manner to follow the Common road continue through Upper Bucklebury and then the Ridge on to Cold Ash and lunch – or so I thought. Unfortunately, I’d forgotten that the Ridge turned off the main Upper Bucklebury-Thatcham road... After an unexpected amount of descent, we arrived at a roundabout just outside Thatcham. Woops. The bad news was that we had a rather long climb back up to lunch. We continued around the Thatcham ring road, before climbing back up to Cold Ash and a well-earned break. Thanks to Richard for confirming the shortest route there by GPS. The service at the Spotted Dog was good; food and drink arrived promptly and in good quantities. Worth using again if coming this way. The shorter return leg started through pretty heathland with some superb rhododendrons in full bloom. We soon descended to the Pang again at Frilsham and continued up the valley to Hampsted Norreys. Just beyond HN we had our penultimate climb of the day on the small lane up to Four Points. This was where my legs regretted the extra climb before lunch.... Having regrouped and rested at the top we continued thorugh Aldworth to reach our second big descent of the day – Streatley hill. Within a minute we were all down safely and grinning. We re-crossed the Thames into Goring and then turned left into Thames Street to take the back roads through the village to avoid the busy B-road. We emerged at the foot of the Elvendon road and soon turned off left towards Ipsden. This lane gives wonderful views across the Vale and the feet of the Chilterns, although it does have some ups and downs. Showery skies ahead of us and a strong side breeze reminded us how lucky we had been to have a dry and sheltered ride. The final drama of the day occurred on (what Robin aptly calls) the Ipsden roller coaster, where a sharp descent is followed by an even sharper climb. An oncoming car checked our descents, and amidst the grind of changing gears, snap! Des’s chain broke. Fortunately, Richard and Robin were on hand to help shorten and re-join it and we were soon able to continue, enjoying the last few miles amid sunshine. We were back in Wallingford at 5pm, after a very satisfying and enjoyable ride. Thanks everyone for your company for being prepared to brave the elements, and not complaining about that extra hill! Thanks too to Robin for sweeping. The stats below are from Richard P. | ||
