|---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders.NB: start at Old Mill Hall, Grove. A re-run of a classic all day Oxford ride, this is a fairly gentle ride, only really designated 3* by the total distance (around 85km / 54 miles). We will go out via Hanney, Steventon & Sutton Courtenay to Long Wittenham, then cross the Thames at Clifton Hampden and go through the Baldons to Garsington and Wheatley. Then a super cunning cut through to Shotover and Headington to view the house with a shark in the roof and a drop down Headington Hill right into the heart of Oxford for a bit of light tourism / tourist dodging (some ex-Bursar's secrets will be revealed). Then we head north along the Oxford Canal to Wolvercote for lunch at the Plough. A circuit of Port Meadow to Botley and Cumnor is followed by a gentle run home via Fyfield. |

But it went well - we had a great group and grateful thanks to Jenny for volunteering to lead a second group on the road.We made good time in the first third of the ride with a nice tailwind (interesting protocol point - with two e-bikes on the ride, spending too much time above 15.5mph/25kph can be awkward as this is the cut-off speed for the motors). We managed to fit in a comfort break at Notcutt's Garden Centre before heading for the tranquility of the Baldons and the first big climb up to Garsington. A drop down to Wheatley was followed by the biggest climb, up Old Road, the rough track to Shotover and the big descent to Headington. After a brief shark stop we dropped down Headington Hill into town, saw some of the sights and then took the canal towpath to a very good lunch at the Plough in Wolvercote. A loop around Port Meadow, the final climb of Cumnor Hill and we headed for home on familiar roads. Thanks to all for a great day out. | ||
