The morning showers abated and the sun came out, but the first hour was into the wind. There were 19 of us (and almost 21 as we overtook James and Gareth practising hill climbing on Court Hill). After catching our breath at the top, the descent on the A338 to the monument was into the teeth of the wind. The climb up to Woolley got everyone panting. At this point the faster group split off following the same route through Chaddleworth and Brightwalton and Lilley before doing their extra loop via Peasmore, World's End, Beedon, Stanmore and E. Ilsley. The slow group split into 3 due to Barbara having a puncture and then taking a short cut while Pat and I swept round in pursuit of the others, all (the slow group) to be reunited by the water tower in Brightwalton. From Lilley there was a delightful ride to W. Ilsley through Catmore, then over the Ridgeway to the A34, Chilton GC and tea. Chris, Jan, Glen, Mary and Steve caught us up on the hill having taken a short cut to Stanmore, while the remaining 5 sportifs arrived just as the rest of us had finished queueing for tea. From tea the led route was via the bridleway behind the Harwell reactor site and the Ginge farm road to Betterton, Ardington and back to Grove via lains Barn. Only 3 of us actually did the planned route! Peter and Darren (looking exhausted!)went straight into Wantage from Lockinge while the rest elected to take the road route to Hendred. The bridleway was fine and hardly sticky at all - honest! It was a harder ride than usual for a Saturday, but good to get up onto the Downs for a change. Steve S. | ||
