Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This week, we'll head south to Lockinge and Betterton for a hillier ride. We'll take the cycle path into Wantage and ride through Charlton to the Nelson where we'll pick up Sustrans route 44. After an easy off-road stretch, we'll follow the pretty route through Lockinge (where we'll stop to say hello to a famour race horse) and climb steadily up to Betterton. From the top of the hill there is a lovely view and a great descent down to Ardington. A second climb will bring us out at the cross-roads above Lains Barn and a second descent into the Vale. A round trip of about 9 miles. These rides are designed to be sociable and leisurely at a riding pace of about 10 miles per hour, suitable for newcomers to cycling, irregular cyclists and families and for those who just fancy a gentle ride . We'll stop to admire the scenery and anything that takes our eye, and no-one will be left behind. All are welcome although U-13s should be accompanied by a responsible adult . |

Report:After touring the backstreets of "Old" Grove to avoid Main Street, we joined the cycleway into Wantage and continued the ride according to plan. We admired Best Mate's bronze statue on the green at Lockinge from afar as we cycled past, and then stopped to take in the view of Lockinge church from the bridge over the brook. The group climbed both of this evenings hills easily (including negotiating the tricky sharp left-hand turn and the short sharp ascent at Betterton) and we enjoyed the two long descents. Just at the point that I might have offered another loop up to Betterton and down again, it started to rain, which fortunately then petered out. Thanks to Dave for sweeping this evening - he will be leading his first ride for us next week. | ||
