Report:Just 3 of us today on a much cooler morning than of late due to a keen north-westerly. So long sleeves and leggings for the first time this autumn. On the first leg out to Denchworth there was a marked contrast in temperature between the shade and the autumn sunshine. At Denchworth an executive decision was taken to reverse the route for an early coffee with the hope of a tailwind and warmer conditions on the way back. It is always interesting to follow a familiar route in the opposite direction. At Stanford, the opportunity was taken for a short tour of the village, eventually emerging on Church Green. Thatchers were at work on the long terrace of thatched cottages opposite the green, deserving of a pause to watch. The coffee shop was relatively empty on arrival and we were served quickly with good coffee/tea and cakes. By the time we left at 11:30, the cafe had filled up considerably. It had indeed warmed up after our stop, and we made good speed with the wind (mostlly) behind us, pausing briefly at Gainfield and then in Charney by the village map. (Well worth a look for it's idiosyncratic details - who knew that a live WWII grenade was discovered in a flower bed by a teenage boy, requiring the bomb squad to be called in). As we made our way back from Lyford, our attention was drawn to a Chinnook helicopter on manoeuvres over the surrounding fields. It passed overhead several times. As we came back into Grove, we could hear the sound of diggers beyond the cemetery, working on the new Grove orbital road. This deserved further investigation, so we turned left into Barley Way to look from behind the barriers and then had a short exploration of the Monk's farm estate. As we left the estate we lost the sunshine. Perfect timing for the end of the ride. Another enjoyable and interesting morning on the bike. | ||
