Report:A sunny day to mark the Wantage group's anniversary!3 of us (Jo came too) rode off for the Ridgeway on our most frequently used route: Crab Hill, Charlton, the cycle path, then up by Goddard's Brook and by the gallops turning left and angling up through the woods. We then did a sharp right and headed West to our Uffington tea stop. The wind was unusually easterly so helped us along. Worth noting that the massive ruts in clay-like soil just before Sparsholt Field have been filled and smoothed - we of course only discovered this after going down the bumpy track on the left! Then it was a fast-as-we-dared run down the farm track, and left on the road via Kingston Lisle to Uffington. We had a few tricky moments with ruts, but got there all ok. On the way back, we knew we would take the lowland route, but i could see a few interesting bridleways on the map. The first one by the railway was great. But the next one had een churned up by horses when wet and had then set solid with some hoof prints nearly a foot deep! Not what you'd call easy going. But, we struggled on and once past this and by the canal we had a more gentle final few miles back into Grove. All told 27 miles: 17 out and 10 back. A mini-epic in keeping with the best off-road rides! | ||
