Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 2* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. Another slight route change as of the 22 July. I am really grateful to those that have contacted me to make sure we don't end up on footpaths, busy parts of the A417, avoid roadworks and see interesting parts of Blewbury. CTC Wantage at its best .Note slight change to route as of 20 July to reduce the amount of time on the A417 (thanks Ursula ) At this stage of the year it seems right to do a slightly longer, flat ride and so this month we're going to wander to the East. We'll cross the A338 at Hanney to reach Hanney Cow Road (current road works may mean a brief stretch on the A338 ) through Steventon to Sutton Courtenay and Appleford. Then skirting Wallingford we'll make our way to Blewbury for a cafe stop at Savages garden centre. We'll then turn left at Upton to go up Hagbourne Hill to discover the changes that have been made with the current A34 slip road alterations. We'll then pick up the sustran 544 route from Harwell Campus to Ardington. Not quite off-road but not tarmaced in all places. Then it's over the A417 for a swoop down to Grove down Lains Barn road. |

Even the locals contacted were not sure if the road between Hanney and Denchworth was open . So we decided we'd skip that part of the route and head straight down the A338. And that's what we did - having paused to welcome Sharon on her first ride with the club.It was a lovely afternoon for a ride - warm sunshine and a slight breeze. The roads to Wallingford were very busy, but perhaps it was the sun making the motorists laid back - there was no car-cyclist incidents . As ever the villages and lanes west of Wallingford did not disappoint. Quite lanes and pretty villages. Despite the leaders best attempts to get everyone lost in Blewbury we made the Style Acres café at Savages garden centre. The cake portions were up to standard and we reluctantly left to tackle the only real hill on the ride. We seemed to skip up Hagbourne Hill where we said goodbye to Chris. An interesting route through the Harwell site and their new road and on to the cycle paths through to Ginge. At Lockinge we said goodbye to Andy and the rest of us swooped down past Lains Barn and back to OMH. Thank you to everyone that came and made it a splendid afternoons cycling. | ||
