Off-road Afternoon Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:1:30 pm |
Start Location:Goring, Manor Road / Long Meadow SU 59959 80297 |
Description:If there is a theme to this ride, it is woody singletrack. There will be more twists and turns than a Le Carré spy thriller in the woods around Woodcote. In exchange, there will be a bit less climbing - not none, but a bit less, and the two main climbs are quite close to the start of the ride. Also there is no major hazards along the route, as long as you watch for fallen trees. This is a route that has proved popular in previous years with riders of a wide range of abilities - everyone can enjoy swooping through the woods, and the faster riders find the turns come more quickly which keeps the challenge levels up. We re-group at the end of each section, which doesn't take long, and no-one gets lost in the woods.Top tip: don't wear your darkest sunglasses in the woods! Twice monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. These will be on the second Saturday afternoons and 4th Sunday mornings. --- General description: The rides will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road, and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). We adjust the ride to suit the riders and the weather, but in general the terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. |

Report:We were joined by Nick Smart from Wallingford, and Jesse from Virginia USA who was doing some reconnaissance before moving to the UK and naturally wanted to check out the trails too. This was a great ride in the woods. It was damp enough to keep the trails firm, but not wet enough to cause any problems. Just as well as Jesse was borrowing my daughter's very basic mountain bike. We followed a route I've used before, doing the 2 main claims early, then going in and out the woods near Woodcote. It was rounded off with a nice run along the Thames Path and back to Goring. | ||
