Isle of Wight 3*
Leader:
Katherine Boyce
Start Time:
8:15 am
Start Location:
Isle of Wight
Description:
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS RIDE IS NOW FULL. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GO ON A WAITING LIST PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Based on the ride that John Talbot did for many years, this uses what I think was the nicest of the rides he did. Although this is just over a 100km riding with just shy of 1400m of climbing, done at the right pace, this is a very accessible ride that takes in the best of the Isle of Wight. Glorious views, swooping hills and a ferry ride at Cowes (£1), what more could you ask for ;).

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO COME :)

We will catch the 08:40 ferry from Lymington Pier (SO41 5SB). We will travel as day return foot passengers (£15.40 for adults and £11.50 for 60+, tickets can be bought online in advance or at the ticket office before sailing), bikes are carried free of charge. The crossing takes 40 minutes. There is a pay and display car park at the ferry terminal (£6.70 for 2-16hrs). Bring enough change for the machines.

You must arrive at least 30mins before the ferry to allow time for parking, buying tickets and boarding. Boarding commences 15 minutes before sailing. We will car share as much as possible.

There is limited food on the ferry (tea, coffee, cakes, toast) but there is a cafe at the ferry terminal if you want to arrive early enough to grab some breakfast!

We'll stop at the Old World Tea Rooms in Godshill for a late morning cuppa/comfort break. Lunch stop will be at the Toll Gate Cafe next to the harbour in Bembridge. We'll aim to stop for an afternoon tea/ice cream and comfort break at Cowes dependant on the time. Return ferry will either be the 17:05 or 18:05 from Yarmouth.

Report:
Well that was a splendid days cycling. Everything came together: great weather, group and roads, oh and food!

12 of us made the early morning journey to Lymington for the ferry. Sharon cycled 10 minutes from her Mother-in-Laws - an excellent plan! We survived the grumpy ticket collector and the large number of scooters as we boarded and arrived on the Island only slightly late. We were quickly off and tackling our first rise, the first of many, before encountering our first quiet lane, with what became trade mark beautiful tarmac. A stop to admire Freshwater Bay and we were on our way again. We settled into a rhythm of fast downhills followed by plodding up hills (well I did anyway, some danced uphill!) but the views were stunning and the group quickly jelled.

Everyone contributed to route finding and no one grumbled when turnings were missed and steps needed retracing. Whenever traffic required it, everyone organised themselves into small groups. Just before our coffee stop at Godshill the cry went up of puncture, whilst the rest of us carried on, Richard and Jon made short work of replacing the tube and before we had a chance to order, they re-joined us. Cream teas before midday were very enjoyable and those having the savouries were just as happy. Onward to lunch at Bembridge which seemed much to soon for some of us! The Tollgate café is a wonderful institution - a real taste of the past, in a beautiful setting, particularly on a warm sunny day.

Then we were on our way to Cowes, just before we reached the chain ferry - now the floating bridge - Richard discovered a slow puncture, probably caused by a small tyre split. Repairs started on the river crossing and completed on the other side, with the aid of a biscuit wrapper ;). The walk through the pedestrian centre was achieved without incident and it wasn't long before we were eating ice cream on the beach.

A final push and we reached the ferry port with a few minutes to spare before check in time.

A really great days riding with a very supportive group of riders. Here's to next year :).

Oh and forgot to say thank you to David Bridges for most of the pictures and we bumped into Karen from Cycling UK Reading who rides with us from time-to-time :)
