2* Saturday Half Day Ride to the Thames | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph).This is a classic ride on some rarely used little roads down into the Thames Valley. Out via Denchworth and Park Lane to Stanford in the Vale, Hatford and a tiny road to the north. Then a quick dash down a short section of the A420 to Littleworth is rewarded by a dramatic drop into the Thames flood plain. Over the river to Clanfield, along to Bampton and a great tea stop at Aston Pottery. Pot buying is optional, but the cafe is great. Suitably fortified, we will take some time to explore the rarely travelled tiny lanes around Shifford down to the Thames at the mysterious hamlet of Chimney (tantalisingly close to the other side of Duxford ford), before conquering the modest challenge of Buckland Hill and (after exploring the back streets of Buckland village) heading for home via Charney Bassett. 40 miles and about four hours in total, so note the slightly earlier start time. |

Fortunately, it all brightened up as we carried on. We had to be strong to ride past Blake's in Clanfield and Lynwood in Bampton, but Aston Pottery was well up to standard, and we also enjoyed their lovely garden flower displays. The route less travelled down to Chimney and the river was as remote and interesting as ever. We even found a short stretch of road that Des had never ridden on before - that is a major achievement!Buckland Hill was conquered well by all and we rolled back to Grove for a second coffee for many. Thanks to all! | ||
