| 1* Saturday Morning Half Day Ride - Hinton Hub | 1* |
|---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A morning start this month to beat the heat. It's about time we checked out the Hinton Hub, the Saturday morning community cafe at Hinton Waldrist. We'll wind our way to Hinton via Charney Bassett using the partially resurfaced bridleway from Sheephouse Farm to Bullockspit Lane in Southmoor. Then over the bridge to Longworth passing the church and manor on the bridleway to Hinton. After refreshments we'll return through the Pusey estate and Lyford. A round trip of about 19 miles. There will be options to shorten if it gets too hot. Our regular social and family ride on the third Saturday of the month, usually with a café stop. We cover 16-32km (10-20 miles) at a leisurely pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph), tackling the occasional hill (nothing too long) and easy off-road track (conditions permitting). Please let the ride leader know if you are planning to come. |

Report:A beautiful sunny morning for a ride, cooler than of late with a refreshing northerly breeze. Just 3 of us today, but it made for a very relaxed morning. We followed the route as planned. The bridleway north from Sheephouse Farm was more challenging than when the two Johns and I tackled it in May. The resurfaced section by the farm had become much rougher from use by farm vehicles and the track north of New House farm (the technical bit) was made difficult by overhanging vegetation. We made it through with a few scratches and the northern section on Bullockspit Lane was easy. Having emerged in Southmoor, we continued into Beggars lane and over the bridge to Longworth. We lingered by the pond next to Longworth Manor and church before continuing on the bridleway to Hinton Waldrist, surprisingly busy with dog walkers, runners and other cyclcists. We received a very warm welcome from Linda and her team at the Hinton Hub in the village hall. Nick opted for a bacon sarnie, while I enjoyed a moist slice of lemon and blueberry cake (delicious!) and we sat outside under an awning with our beverages of choice. Back on the road, we passed through fields that had already been harvested, with large straw bales dotted across the stubble. The return through the Pusey estate was delightful, with wide-ranging views across the fields towards the Downs from the estate road, before crossing the field of flax and plunging into the cool wood. Back through Charney and Lyford to Grove, returning to OMH just before 1. Thank you gentleman for your company on a thoroughly enjoyable ride. | ||
