10 Mile Club 1* 1*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
A hillier but pretty ride this evening heading up to Betterton and continuing on to Ginge following Sustrans route 44. There is a great descent down to West Hendred, where we'll stop briefly to look at the medieval church. After a mile stretch along the A417, we'll retun to Grove via Ardington and Wantage. 13 miles. (Slight change of plan on the way back as the Lains Barn road has just been re-gritted.)

These rides are designed to be sociable and leisurely at a riding pace of about 10 miles per hour, suitable for newcomers to cycling, irregular cyclists and families and for those who just fancy a gentle ride . We'll stop to admire the scenery and anything that takes our eye, and no-one will be left behind. All are welcome although U-13s should be accompanied by a responsible adult and U-18s require parental consent.

Report:
A cooler and breezier evening than expected. We followed some back routes through Grove and Wantage en route to the Nelson and Route 44. We saw the off-roaders ahead of us and surprisingly caught them up at West Lockinge. We cycled together for all of 50 yards before they veered off through the stables on their way up to the Ridgeway.

We climbed steadily up to Ginge and after a brief rest by "Ginge International" (as John calls it - they fly microlights from the farm) continued over the crest and down the hill into West Hendred. The wind was against us, so it was not as fast as usual.

We stopped by the church in West Hendred and had to make do with peering through the windows as the door was locked.

After a brief mechanical, we returned along the A417 which was still rather busy at 7:45, pulling off to the peace and quiet of Ardington. Then back to Grove via route 44 and Charlton. An enjoyable ride.
