Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:60-70km (38 - 45 miles) ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-22km/h (13-14mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. If the weather is reasonable I'm planning to try and get to the Chilterns up Brixton Hill to Nuffield and down Swyncombe Hill with a teastop at Benson Waterfront. A bit longer than advertised (84 km or 52 miles) but pretty flat other than the main hill of the afternoon. As the final destination is fairly distant I've had to programme in a stretch of the A417, but I've put that at the beginning so we can get it done whilst we are fresh UPDATE :- Currently (Tue afternoon) a strong SW wind is forecast for Saturday. I will alter this to a westwards first route if that becomes reality. UPDATE :- Sat morning. Forecast looking pretty good now. Southerly wind won't bother us too much and not as strong as previously forecast. So plan is to follow original route to Benson. If the weather goes bad we can cut off the Nuffield climb at Ipsden. |

Report:Select group this afternoon - everyone watching the olympics?Welcome to new rider Rebecca who unfortunately had to turn back at the Hendreds with a problem with her bike, I hope that she is able to join us on future rides. The ride went very well with some beautiful weather. The wind was rarely in our faces and was actually beneficial for many stretches. The climb to Nuffield up Brixton Hill was excellent, going up in three sections with the middle section the steepest. The descent down Swyncombe Hill was fast and smooth. We pushed the pace through Ewelme and Benson to get to the Waterfront Café before the rain came. We managed it just in time After refreshments and the rain had stopped we head off back through Wallingford and another brief heavy shower. A tailwind pushed us up Sires Hill (and my PB up there which is amazing as I ride that road several times a week!). Legs began to tire as we finished via the Hanney Road and a headwind down the A338 to Grove. Thanks for coming on the ride, the Chilterns are a way away from Wantage but is fantastic cycling country. | ||
