Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:I'm fancying a fairly tough, hilly ride this Saturday. Call me crazy if you like...Up Chain Hill from Wantage, across the rollercoaster road to East Illsley, then via Compton and Hermitage to the edge of Newbury (with a nod to the Vodafone campus, source of my pension...) Then a long run along the B4000, more or less on top of the ridge, before we swoop down to Lambourne and the drag up to Ashbury Hill. Then back through the Vale of White Horse to Grove. A fairly long Saturday afternoon ride, around 50 miles, but should be do-able at a 3* pace in around 4 hours. Not sure about tea stop - maybe somewhere around Newbury, maybe Lambourne - let's see how we feel. |

True to recent form, we managed to avoid it and seemed to be riding around the edge of a cloud for the first 10 miles or so. Just as well, as this was the toughest part of the ride, unrelenting hills across to Compton and Hampstead Norreys. Our luck held until we had traversed Newbury (checking the Vodafone campus is still in good shape) and climbed Snake Lane to Stockcross. Then the heavens did open and we had an almost hail storm for about 10 minutes. Fortunately, that was as bad as it got and after a shop stop in Lambourne we had the best of the day's sunshine for a revised route home via Blowingstone Hill and Kingston Lisle. Thanks to everyone for good company and a great ride. | ||
