Wallingford Cycle Ride 2*
Leader:
John Talbot
Start Time:
1:30 pm
Start Location:
Wallingford Market Place
Description:
25 miles West of Wallingford to the Wittenhams, Didcot and the Hagbournes. Tea in Blewbury.

We will be following the Sustainable Wallingford routes west of Wallingford. A PDF Leaflet describing the route is available.

Two hills to be aware of, over Wittenham Clumps and up Hagbourne Hill. We will stop at Savages in Blewbury for tea and cake.

Wallingford is a great place for a bike ride, but has not recently had many rides for the local leisure cyclist. To put this right, CTC Oxfordshire has organised a series of 5 rides for the Wallingford cycling community over the spring and summer. These are based on the popular format of 25 to 40 miles on a Sunday afternoon with a stop for tea and cake. Even if you haven’t done much cycling recently, 25 miles can be surprisingly easy to cover with good company and a suitable refreshment half way.

These rides will be at at sociable rather than sporty pace, about 11-13 mph on the road. Some hills are inevitable, but they will be kept to a few. The rides will be led by experienced leaders, and follow CTC guidelines to be safe and enjoyable for everyone. Non-CTC members are welcome, but we ask that you join the CTC if you intend to ride more than 5 times with us.

The rides will start from Wallingford Market Place, just outside the Tourist Information Centre at 1:30pm on the first Sunday of each month. (The nearby Goldsmiths Lane car park is currently free on Sundays.) They will normally arrive back at 4:30 to 5pm.

The exception will be 7th July, which will be a ‘picnic ride’ starting about 10am to coincide with the Benson Veteran Cycle Club Rally, and returning mid-afternoon.

Report:
A very successful start to the Wallingford rides. We had 15 riders (regular CTC Wantage riders listed to the left at the moment) and lots of enthusiasm for organised rides from Wallingford.

We followed the route as planned to Upton and as the teashop shuts at 4pm we went straight to Blewbury where we enjoyed a relaxing stop in the sunshine eating cake and drinking tea.

Whilst we were stopped a sudden hiss of air heralded the only mechanical incident of the ride. If you are going to have a puncture the best place is when the bike is leant up against a teashop!!

We went back to Wallingford via Blewbury, Aston Upthorpe and a circuit around Aston Tirrold for the fun of it!

Great afternoon out on the bikes. Roll on the next one!!
