CTC Wantage 20th Anniversary 3* Ride 3*
Leader:
John Talbot
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
CTC Wantage celebrates its 20th Anniversary with a special afternoon of rides at various levels all culminating in a special tea and cake stop.

I'm thinking something a bit unusual for this special 20th anniversary ride. Trying some hills we normally go the other way up and roads we rarely (if ever) traverse.

Out through Wantage to Childrey and up the unnamed hill we normally come down from the top of Hackpen Hill. Down into Lambourn and then up Baydon Road (we've never been up there that I know of!).

Along to Foxhill and down Hatchett Hill (again not been up or down this one).

Then how about a reverse climb of White Horse Hill? I've never done that. Have you? If we have time we can optionally do that.

We'll deserve plenty of cakes at the special anniversary tea-stop at Uffington after that lot before a short ride back to Grove.

Report:
Great turnout for our 20th Anniversary on a much cooler and cloudier afternoon than of late.

We set off via Wantage and along to Sparsholt before tackling the hill up to the top of Hackpen Hill. We should do this hill more often, good surface and a steady climb, it makes a nice change from Hackpen!

After re-grouping at the top we had a super fast descent into Lambourn which was great fun. We turned right and left to head up Baydon Hill. I've never been up here before and it was a nice steady climb.

The Baydon Road to Foxhill was undulating, it reminded me of the road from Farnborough to West Ilsley. Some nice descents and some short sharp ascents.

The descent to Hatchett Hill was interrupted by a giveway near the bottom which saw some sharp pulling on of brakes! The B4507 through Bishopstone and Idstone to Ashbury is as undulating in this direction as it is in the other!

Most of us decided to tackle White Horse Hill in the reverse direction than we normally do, it's shorter and steeper this way around and somewhat easier. The descent the other side has great views but is about as nasty as the other side with cars coming up and a crossroads at the bottom.

There was still loads of cake left when we got to Uffington, thanks to Carin, Kerry and Lorna for laying on a great spread. We had a lovely relaxing chat and social gathering with birthday cake (with unlit candles!) (mm)

All the road groups went the same way back via Baulking and Goosey and we picked up a couple from the other groups and lost a few to make their own way back.

A great afternoon, thanks for celebrating our 20th Anniversary with us (clap)
