10 Mile Club 1* | 1* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A mix of a little climbing, some nice descents, flat riding in the Vale and some easy off-road this week with some options to shorten if weather deteriorates...We'll head out through Charlton to Lockinge and take a short-cut through to Ardington with a nice long descent into the village. Then we'll climb up to the Lains Barn cross-roads and enjoy the longer drop down into the Vale. When we reach the A338 there will be an option to cut the ride short, by heading straight back into Grove (8 miles total) or taking the A338 and looping back via the Hanneys (14 miles total). If it's dry , we can use the delightful track across to Denchworth from West Hanney. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Report:Despite the big black cloud hanging over the vale, there were 5 takers for the 1* ride. The rain eventually arrived as we were mustering in the car park, but it was relatively gentle, and after delaying the start to allow most of the shower to pass, we headed towards Wantage and the only patch of blue in the sky. While we caught our breath at the start of Sustrans Route 544, another arm of the shower caught up with us, but after a few minutes of gentle wet it cleared, the sun came out and it turned into a glorious evening. Enjoying the evening sunshine, we chose the extended on-road option, resting only briefly in West Hanney on the way back. The sun was setting as we crossed the railway bridge and returned to Grove, a reminder of how quickly the days shorten at this time of year. Back at 8:15 after a most enjoyable ride. | ||
