Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weather update @ 12: no change in the forecast so ride will go ahead, expect showers and please come prepared.9.30 Saturday morning. It looks like we are going to be playing dodge the showers this afternoon, with the main one being at 1pm. I will make a final decision at 12 but at the moment the ride is on, with waterproofs . Monthly 60-70km (38 - 45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. Its the right time of year to go a bit further, so thought we could venture into the Cotswolds and have tea in Filkins. The A420 should be a doddle at Shrivenham as it will still be closed, then its Highworth, Filkins. Returning via Bampton, Buckland, finishing with Charney and Denchworth. We are unlikely to be back before 5.30. The sharp eyed amongst you will realise this route is provided courtesy of David Smith. Thanks David |

Report:So we started to assemble at Old Mill Hall as the rain started to clear and there was a hint of blue sky. We came up with a plan b if we needed it (bail out at Highworth) and off 4 of us set. Round the corner we encountered Jan and then there was 5.My optimism at removing my waterproof lasted until Goosey - the coolness and hint of rain made me reconsider. The heavy shower on the way to Longcot showed I was right to reconsider . It was a bit much that the heaviest part of the shower was when the sun was shining! After that, we enjoyed a very quiet a420, picking our way through some work vans to reach the pedestrian and cycle way through to the Highworth road and a lovely ride through the Cotswolds to Filkins. Disappointment at the lack of scones was overcome with a rather tasty cherry and raspberry cake. We went inside when the temperature dropped, the wind increased and the thunder rumbled. Despite this, the threatened rain never appeared and with raincoats removed we carried on to Clanfield where we said goodbye to Jan. An uneventful return to Grove with Dave giving us a peerless display of hill climbing at Buckland Hill. Despite the forecast, just one heavy shower and a bit of thunder ensured a pleasant afternoon ride. | ||
