From Campagne sur Aude, the Aude river gorge winds its' way up at a very constant but pretty friendly gradient before descending down to the plain leading to St Paul de Fenouillet, which is where we stopped for coffee. At this point, a little divergence from the riding is quite important. The bar we had coffee in was most strange. The Lemmy-lookalike "customer service representative" grunted his way through serving us and the rustic toilets were an experience (hopefully) to never be repeated again. At least the coffee was excellent. The Gorges de Galamus must be the most impressive gorge I've ever ridden through, even in comparison to the Gorges de la Nesque last year. As we climbed through the gorge, the full vistas opened up in slow motion - narrows, wall overhangs, chicanes - this had them all. Look it up! A bit more climbing and we found a sheltered spot for lunch A local stray dog sniffed around and looked at us for quite a while with its' big brown eyes, but ultimately remained hungry. A bit more climbing and there was a spectacular descent to follow - hairpins, straights and long sweeping curves - nice! Desperate for ice-creams or cold drinks, pretty much everywhere was closed save for the cafe at the end of the ride - most deserved! | ||
