10 Mile Club 1* | 1* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A few ups and downs on the 1* ride this week as we cycle out through Charlton to follow NCN544 to Lockinge, Betterton and Ginge. We'll drop down to West Hendred and return via Ardington and Lains Barn. Two fantastic descents to enjoy and some great views over the Vale. A round trip of about 14 miles. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Riders:Alvaro ReyBrian Hipwell Edith Hipwell Ian Mackay Lorna Swanton Sarah Dore Steve Swanton Riders = 7 Weather:Report:6 riders set off from Grove to be joined by Alvaro at the start of the track off Larkhill (NCN 544). From Lockinge, we climbed steadily to Ginge and continued to the very top of the hill above West Hendred before stopping for a well-earned rest. As ever the descent into West Hendred was fun although there seem to be growing number of substantial potholes to negotiate . A short stretch along the A417 (now a lovely road surface ) brought us to Ardington, where first Edith and Brian and slightly later Alvaro left us to continue into Wantage. There were a few tiring legs when we reached the top of the climb to the Lains Barn cross-roads but the reward was our second long descent of the evening through the trees and out into the vale. There was something of a headwind on the stretch back to Grove and a short sharp shower prompted some of us to don waterproofs (at which point the rain abruptly stopped, of course). We were back in Grove at 8:10, meeting the 2* group coming down Main St just as we turned into School Lane. Thanks everyone for an enjoyable ride and welcome back to Ian on one of his occasional visits to Wantage. | ||
