Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:For our penultimate ride of the season a leisurely outing to Childrey, a round trip of about 11 miles. We'll use some of the cycle routes through Wantage (A338 , Adkin Way, Stockham) en route to East Challow, where we'll take the track and bridleway across to Childrey. After a rest by the village pond, we'll drop down the bridleway to West Challow. Following a short stretch along the A417, we will continue to Denchworth, where there is the option for a sociable drink at the Fox PH. If you will be stopping at the pub and then cycling home. you'll need lights. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Report:A heavy shower at 6pm didn't bode well, but having donned waterproofs and overshoes, the rain stopped and the sun came out. Amazingly, despite all the dark threatening clouds around we had a dry ride.A select group of 3 this evening. For a change we followed the Mary Green (shared-use) path as far as Sharland Close and then continued onto main Street via Cane Lane. The wiggly route continued to East Challow where we stopped for a rest before tackling the bridleway across to Childrey. Fortunately, the vegetation had been cut back since we last came this way. At this point, we decided to take the road route back via Challow Station and Goosey. Finding a "road ahead closed" sign as we left Childrey, we decided to press on, but found no obstructions at all, just another sign at the A417 end. Having the wind and sun behind us made for very pleasant riding and we were soon back in Denchworth, where we said goodbye to John. A most sociable evening then ensued in the Fox before riding back into Grove in the dark. | ||
