Betjeman Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:Betjeman Park, Wantage |
Description:As part of the Wantage Festival and in partnership with the Trustees of the Betjeman Park in Wantage, this is a gentle beginners ride from the Park to Uffington, where John Betjeman lived during the 1930's.We leave the Park and cut across to Grove past the famous Plane on a Stick, then Denchworth, Goosey and Baulking to the parish church in Denchworth, where delicious tea and cakes await. 10 miles and no hills - seriously, anyone can do this! If you are up for it, we will guide riders back to Grove/Wantage as well. |

Report:A very interesting and enjoyable version of the Betjeman Ride this year. The origin of this ride was to make a connection between Wantage and Uffington, both places where John Betjeman lived during the 1930's-50's. It was proposed by the Trustees of the Betjeman Millennium Park in Wantage. So this year we had two very important (although arguably somewhat elderly) Trustees on the ride - Ralph and Sue Cobham. They added greatly to the interest and fun of the ride, although we also dropped our average speed quite a lot!Oh - and the new Mayor of Wantage, StJohn Dickson, arrived to send us off in style! Lots of kindness and good catering at Uffington church. Delicious cakes! Also two new riders intending to ride with us again - welcome to Mike and Dan! | ||
