Betjeman Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:Betjeman Park, Wantage |
Description:NOTE:- Change of date.As part of the Wantage Festival and in partnership with the Trustees of the Betjeman Park in Wantage, this is a gentle beginners ride from the Park to Uffington, where John Betjeman lived during the 1930's. We leave the Park and cut across to Grove past the famous Plane on a Stick, then Denchworth, Goosey and Baulking to the parish church in Uffington, where delicious tea and cakes await. 10 miles and no hills - seriously, anyone can do this! The average speed will be around 10-11 mph. If you are up for it, we will guide riders back to Grove/Wantage by the same route in reverse as well. |

Having successfully negotiated the traffic challenges around the edges of Wantage and Grove, we settled down on the quiet lanes and pottered nicely to Baulking. Having stopped for a rest, we decided to explore the village - a first for me. It is very nice and has a very unique feel to it compared to other Vale villages - well worth exploring this little known dead end! This filled in time nicely so that we arrived at Uffington church perfectly in time for their always amazing tea and cakes. Eating outside on the tables provided was a bonus. It was great to welcome Tony and Rosemary Garde, Dawn Stephens and Graham Reeves to ride with us for the first time. Also good to welcome back the Hook/Moggach family with their amazing assorted children-carrying bike gadgets. Also very wonderful to have Edith riding with us again. All in all, a great success - thanks to all, particularly to John Vandore for organising and publicising. | ||
