Thame Special: into the woods | 3* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Southern Road car park, Thame OX9 2EE |
Description:Please can you let me know by this Friday (24th) if you are intending to come. I need to let cafes know numbers or to cancel them if everybody is busy. Thanks KatherinePLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF STARTING LOCATION. MAJOR EVENT TAKING PLACE AT ORIGINAL VENUE. A ride of 2 halves: the morning will be into the Chiterns, the afternoon the Vale of Aylesbury. A reasonably hilly ride (just over a 1000m and about 100km). We start by picking up the Chiltern Cycleway just beyond Chinor before wending our way on various cycle ways to Wendover woods. We'll stop for an early lunch at the Cafe in the Woods. With the majority of the climbing done, we'll go through Tring to pick up the NB cycle route at Cublington. We'll be on that for most of the afternoon. It'll take us through Quainton to the cafe at the George and Dragon for an afternoon cake stop. Then it's on through the grounds of Waddesdon Manor, Long Crendon and Shabbington before we return to Thame. The overall pace of this ride will not be fast with the amount of climbing. As with all my hilly rides, you'll be waiting for me at the top of the hills! |

Riders:Andy PixtonChris Walters David Talboys Hugh Falkner Katherine Boyce Nick Stokell Ursula Hallam Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Luckily the hoards of runners expected to flood the car parks of Thame did not materialise . But the car park chosen was so obscure, there was some difficulty in everyone finding it . But just after 9, 6 of us set off to Chinor to met Ursula. It was a lovely start, sunshine, no wind, a gentle down hill all the way to Chinor. The 7 of us then did the first of the hills - up to Bledlow Ridge. And then it was a series of hills for the next 50 kilometres or so. Fantastic views, no sun and lots of waiting for the leader to reach the top! The final hill before lunch was very steep and relentless. But we all made it. Then on to the Café in the Woods (highly recommended) down the wrong way on a one way private road. Much to the disgust of a random dog walker but we didn't cause any traffic issues (honest!) After a very pleasant lunch, we went the right way down the one-way road and descended to Tring. A rolling afternoon ensued, a continuation of awful motorists, very busy main roads, reasonably quiet back roads, great views and much less hills. The tea shop attached to the George and Dragon in Quainton proved as good as the pub was last year. Great ice cream, milk shakes and coffee, you can't ask for more . The final 25km into Thame flew by and then goodbye to Ursula as she took the gentle downhill back to Chinor and we were back in the obscure car park. Thank you all for contributing to a really great club ride. Oh and did I mention that Hugh cycled to the start? | ||
