Betjeman Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Betjeman Park, Wantage |
Description:As part of the Wantage Festival and in partnership with the Trustees of the Betjeman Park in Wantage, this is a gentle beginners ride from the Park to Uffington, where John Betjeman lived during the 1930's.We leave the Park and cut across to Grove past the famous Plane on a Stick, then Denchworth, Goosey and Baulking to the parish church in Uffington, where delicious tea and cakes await. 10 miles and no hills - seriously, anyone can do this! The average speed will be around 10-11 mph. If you are up for it, we will guide riders back to Grove/Wantage by the same route in reverse as well. |

Riders were popping up from all corners of the Park and by the time we were ready to roll there were 23 of us. This was further enhanced when Tony, Christine and grand-daughter joined us in Denchworth. So 26 in total!Given the large numbers, we split into two groups for most of the ride, and it was therefore fortunate that I could call on Roger, Brian and Karl to assist with shepherding the groups. Thanks to all! The weather was perfect, mercifully not too hot, and all the riders managed the ride out to Uffington with no problems at all. The youngest was 8 years old, but this didn't seem to be any hindrance. As last year, we took the opportunity for a little detour to Baulking Green and had a go at bike-back cow herding. Long story, but Roger proved to be good at it... The Uffington Church catering and musical team were magnificent and, suitably fortified, various groups set off in slightly different directions in the general direction of Wantage and Grove. It was a very fine afternoon! | ||
