D-Day 75 Normandy Tour | 3* |
---|
Leader:Richard Pethybridge |
Start Time:7:00 pm |
Start Location:Whale Island, Portsmouth |
Description:This year's Normandy ride is going to be a little different! 2019 is the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings of 1944 and so the weekend is going to be spent exploring the area along Gold, Juno, Sword and Omaha beaches, staying overnight in Bayeux and finishing off on Sunday with visits to Pegasus Bridge and The Merville Battery. The idea will be to visit a number of key D-Day sites, at which yours truly will give a quick description of why that place was important and the role it played in the landings. The group will travel from Portsmouth to Ouistreham on Friday evening, before returning from France on the Sunday afternoon ferry. The outbound sailing is at 2245 from Portsmouth to Caen with Brittany Ferries. The plan will be to rendezvous at the RN base at Whale Island (full details to be provided in due course) earlier in the evening before enjoying a pub meal in advance of embarkation. Some other admin points: 1. All riders will need to have comprehensive personal travel insurance before they can come on the ride. That cover must include cycling in a foreign country. Remember - your EHIC will (almost certainly) no longer be valid when we travel, and even if it is it doesn't cover being repatriated in the event of injury. 2. Check your passport for validity. Assuming Brexit has happened there are specific rules about how much time you need to have remaining on its dates and you will be refused embarkation if your passport does not meet the requirements. The rules are complicated, so I recommend using the government's checking tool here: https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/check-a-passport 3. Numbers are going to be limited to 14. Anyone wishing to come with us should email me to let me know. Everyone is responsible for making their own ferry and hotel bookings. Full details of each day's ride are included in the next listings for the days in question, but if you want any further information please email me on pethybridgera@yahoo.co.uk or call on 07875 456521. |
