The views across the Vale were clear and wide-ranging and the Autumn colours near their peak. After a lumpy wind-assisted ride to Kingston Winslow we headed north towards Shrivenham and started to notice the wind for the first time. After climbing towards Highworth we dropped down through Sevenhampton and on to the Freke Arms at Hannington for lunch. After our meal the sun had gone and the wind had stiffened in the East. So we were battling into it for much of the afternoon. We continued north towards Fairford cycling around the south side of the airbase then via the scenic route N. of the A417 to Lechlade. The Black Cat was full alas, so we headed out to the Garden Centre for tea. By this stage, the youngsters were tiring, so the decision was taken to split the group at Buscot with Steve leading Clair, Angela and Richard (and Pat) back via Faringdon, Fernham & Baulking while the main group continued via Coleshill & the Coxwells. The route via Faringdon was at least 54 miles and we got back to Grove just after 6pm at sunset. Steve S. | ||
