Summer Solstice ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:4:15 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:NB: this ride is re-scheduled from the previous weekend. All details are the same - please contact me if you would like to join those who have carried forward from last week.A fully revised route devised especially for the current circumstances. This is a pre-bookable ride, the group will be a maximum of 8 people and booking is now open. A hilly ride of 72 miles / 116km with 1160 meters of climbing starting at 04.15 in Wantage Market place. We will start by climbing to see the sunrise from Hackpen Hill before dropping down to take the Springline Road through to Chilseldon and a quiet A road to Avebury. After admiring the stones, we will take the back roads to Marlborough, passing the little known Marlborough White Horse. Return will be via Ramsbury and Hungerford, before taking our previous route with one of the easier climbs over the Ridgeway to Chain Hill for a hoped for glorious decent back to Wantage. Please bring snacks with you as we will not be stopping at the garage in Chilseldon as in previous years. We are likely to pass through Marlborough too early for a proper breakfast but can grab a coffee and snack from Greggs or Cafe Nero before going on to Hungerford for a 'proper' stop at Elianes. You will also need to bring lights, suncream (?) and layers to stave off the pre-dawn chill! |

Report:Much thanks is due to Katherine for creating a really great route for this ride - one to store away and use again. The weather was very overcast so we sadly didn't see the sunrise - the clouds just got a bit lighter! But it was a great ride to Avebury - always useful to be on the roads so early, it reminded us of Lockdown #1. A bit misty and moisty in places, but on the whole we stayed dry. The back road to Marlborough was lovely, although we opted out of the rough track past the White Horse. Our arrival in Marlborough at 07.30 precisely coincided with Cafe Nero opening and they made us very welcome. As a result we decided on a one stop strategy. The rest of the ride was great and we finished off with the usual fun swoop down Chain Hill as everyone peeled off for home. 72 miles and home before lunch! Thanks to Richard and Sharon for great company. | ||
