Cotswold Explorer | 3* |
---|
Leader:Richard Pethybridge |
Start Time:8:30 am |
Start Location:Burford Car Park |
Description:Welcome to the latest 5th Saturday away-day ride. The plan is to go exploring through some of the prettiest (and remote) parts of the Cotswolds, north-west of Burford. There will be a coffee stop after about 30km in Bourton-on-the-Water, and lunch will be near Stow-on-the-Wold after about 70km. The total distance will be 105km with 1150m of climbing. We will meet at the car park in Burford, with the aim to start the ride at 0830. Apparently it is easily found by taking the turning by Mrs Bumbles and following the road around past the Church, but be cautious as you enter - there is only enough width for a car coming in or out of the car park. There are toilets here, and being that early there should be plenty of space even in July. I am happy to ride this with up to 11 others - please email me on pethybridgera@yahoo.co.uk or message on 07875 456521 to book a place. |

Riders:Andy PixtonJo Little John Tranter Katherine Boyce Richard Pethybridge Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Well, what a great ride this turned out to be. Parking was simple and everyone was early, so we got away in good time. The weather was a bit greyer than would have been preferred, but that did mean it was also cooler, so not all bad. The first third of the day was very uppy-downy, out through the Barringtons before climbing up to Great Rissington. That was followed by a descent to Sherborne before looping back up for a very welcome coffee stop in Bourton-on-the-water. After some obligatory photos we headed north and north west almost as far as Snowshill (although without the descent to that village which would have been anti-social). We did get to see the Cotswold Lavender Farm though, which at just over 1000ft was the high point of the ride. Lunch was enjoyed at the rather excellent Golden Ball pub in Lower Swell, before a steep climb up to Stow-on-the-Wold began the afternoon's delights. We passed Dalesford Farm as Boris Johnson was enjoying his nuptials courtesy of another rich friend, and although it started raining at that point unfortunately the shower was brief and light. The ride finished with a lovely descent down to Asthall before a short meander back along to the start at Burford. The climb, at nearly 1500m, was more than predicted but the group coped admirably well and a great day out was had by all. Thanks to everyone for making it so much fun, and to Andy for being an excellent sweep throughout. | ||
