Oxfordshire Triennial Veterans' Century Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:Islip Village Hall OX5 2TA |
Description:This year's Oxfordshire Century Ride will form one of a series of Triennial Veterans' Rides (or Tri-vets) taking place across the country in June and July. The Tri-vets rides date back to the CTC's golden jubilee year of 1928 and are aimed at riders over the age of 50. As ours is also our regular Annual Century ride, you don’t have to be over 50 to ride. The ride will start from Islip Village Hall, but please park at Islip railway station, 400m from the hall, if coming by car. The route covers almost the length of the county reaching from almost Banbury to beyond Faringdon. Arrive at least 20 minutes before the 8am ride start. Stops will be at: 25 miles – Coffee: Cotefield Nurseries, Bodicote 50 miles – Lunch: Charlbury (formerly Ramsden) Garden Centre (probably from a reduced menu for quick service) 75 miles – Tea-time: The Horse and Jockey pub, Stanford-in-the-Vale Riders will pay for refreshments individually, as on a regular club ride, and we will not have a fee for the event. We will need to limit numbers to 36 (3 groups of 12) on a first-come first-served basis. Please register through the link below. One of the groups will be slightly slower than the others as an ideal ‘gentle Century’ taking up to 12 hours for the full event, one will be slightly faster but still ‘touring pace’ not ‘sporty pace’, and one will be a ‘happy medium’. If you book and find out you can not come, please tell us. >>> Register on this link <<< The route from three years ago will give you an idea of the route but look out for an update closer to the day. |

Temperatures rose high, and we even experienced a little melting tarmac, but never got so hot that we were really suffering. The first leg from Islip to Bodicote near Banbury was fairly striaghtforward, some great roads to start and a bit busier to end. The garden centre was well prepared for us. The second leg started with an interesting trip through the houses, but was soon on very quiet roads. Closing in on Ramsbury we encountered many Alfa Romeo cars whose drivers and co-pilots appeared to be on some form of treasure hunt. More traffic than usual, but very friendly. Charlbury Garden Centre did a great job for us, being well prepared with our pre-ordered lunches. The third stint of riding was very enjoyable. We encountered a cycling road race just after Bamford. There was a long stretch of the A4095 towards Faringdon in the heat of the day, but the traffic was light and we were in a rhythm, so we just kept going. Getting to Faringdon, we found ourselves in the middle of their 'Follyfest' and took a picture with the giant inflatable pink pigeon of the Farcycles group. The Horse and Jockey at Stanford in the Vale was well set up for drinks of any kind, but there was confusion over the cake (which was set out in small slices, but it was not clear that it was £2 a slice - fair, but not clear). They sold less than they could I think, and I think we'll talk to them about a better way next time. The ride from there was more pleasant countryside - the section from Hinton Waldrist to Cumnor I always enjoy (prevailing Westerlies may have something to do with this), and I like the 'cheek' of the hidden cycle track just before the A34 flyover and the 'hole in the hedge' that gets you from the A420/A34 roundabout to the quiet Wytham road. Once we'd navigated Oxford, it was a short stretch back to Islip where each group celebrated in turn, and certificates were handed out to the centurions. 25 started the ride, and one cut short at half way, so 24 completed the 100 miles. (Actually 101). | ||
