New Forest Gridiron |
---|
Leader:Chris Walters |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Boldre, Hampshire |
Description:100km ride around the periphery of the New Forest. The format is similar to an Audax, but with 600 expected riders, it will feel more like a Sportive! The plan is to ride at a moderate but not speedy pace (the controls will not be open if we go too fast!)This is a fantastic ride around the scenic New Forest and very well organised. Obviously car assisted - let me know ASAP if you intend to come, so we can arrange lift sharing. http://www.wessexctc.org/grdetail.htm - you can book your entry (advised!) from this page. Riders:Chris WaltersDean Douglas Sorrel Williams Riders = 3 Report:For the second day in a row, the forecast was "sub optimal"! The additional promised riders of Steve and Angela (decorated the lounge), Paul S (drove as far as Winchester before turning back) and Steve Q (didn't even see him!) failed to materialise. The weather was pretty poor (lashings of wind-driven rain) to start with, but we knuckled down and got the first stage over and done with and had a very welcome cuppa at Hyde. The rain had gone away by the time we emerged, so the remainder of the ride was done in much better conditions. There were many hazards to negotiate... the obvious cattle grids which were wet and slippery, the fords which contained deep water in some cases (wet feet in general and a strategic portage around the ford near Woodlands - it looked too deep), many ponies, cows and even piglets (Sorrel wanted to take one home). The second stop at Colbury had a much better biscuit selection so we munched and slurped outside in the sunshine before pushing onwards towards Beaulieu, where a fantastically timed ice-cream stop meant we avoided a monster downpour Just the final leg to go on flat roads back to Boldre, punctuated only by a quick stop to put some more air into Dean's back tire. More tea and sandwiches followed at the end - a great ride despite the weather - good company and a fantastic and varied route, which can be seen here: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/1007981. | ||
