We made good progress deciding to take a diversion from the planned ride, taking the what we thought was a track to Shifford passed the Church. However the track was freshly tarmaced and was better than any of the roads we had cycled during the ride. Steve Bruffell's sister joined us on the ride forgive me Steve if I have got the name wrong I think it was Mandy - very nice to meet you. The tea stop at Aston Pottery was very enjoyable in the new premises; the prices have risen slightly but the cakes are still homemade and lovely. On the return journey Richard set off early. We made good progress as far as Buckland, where we discovered a house fire in progress. There must have been 10 fire engines fighting the thatch fire. I led the assault through the fire engines not realising that Brian and Steve S had been sent on a diversion through the village. We headed on back to Grove. On reaching the edge of Denthworth, I glimpsed Richard just in front and decided to give chase. Chris pulled in front of me and said "get on my back wheel". In the rain that had desended on us in Buckland and no mudguard on Chris's cycle, well you can guess what happened. Anyway, I over took Richard and raced him back to Grove. I won.
