Description:PLEASE NOTE: THIS RIDE IS NOW FULL. IF YOU WANT TO PUT YOUR NAME ON A WAITING LIST THEN I WILL LET YOU KNOW IF A SPACE OCCURS.This is day 1 of a two day visit to the New Forest. We are making it a weekend away and are staying in Lyndhurst from Friday to Sunday. We usually all meet up Friday evening for a meal at La Pergola, which is close to the ride starting point. It would be possible, however, to travel down early on Saturday and just treat it as a day ride. This year's New Forest ride is nearly identical to last year's, heading us into the more unfamilar territory to the north and west of the forest. As always we're keeping to quieter roads where possible and should see a good range of scenery, including both forest and heathland. We head to the north of Lyndhurst before dropping down near Fordingbridge. Our first cafe stop is at The Pantry Barn, Breamore (23 miles). We then skirt the edge of Ringwood before heading to The Old Farmhouse at Burley (48 miles), after which we take a familiar route back to Lyndhurst, including the ascent of Bolderwood Drive. 60 miles and 856m of climbing. The starting place for both days is the Bolton's Bench car park on the B3056 Lyndhurst to Beaulieu road. When approaching from Lyndhurst village (on the A35 Southampton Road) the B3056 is on the right hand side, opposite the fire station. The car park is immediately on the left. It has a large car park. Lyndhurst has several small hotels, including the Ormonde House Hotel and The Penny Farthing. There are also some B&B's. We have booked The Ormonde House Hotel for when we stay, and can highly recommend it as they are very friendly and helpful, but the area is popular so it would be best to book quickly. I am limiting both days to 12 riders, as any more is too much on these roads and we will split into 2 groups for ease of riding. Please contact me if you would like to put your name down. |

Description:We follow more familiar roads today, starting again at Bolton's Bench in Lyndhurst. We head towards Bolderwood, ascending it the easier way and then ride along the very scenic Rhinefield Ornamental drive. We go off road for a short while as we skirt Brockenhurst, but the road is slightly sand/gravel and looks fine for road bikes. We then head towards Bucklers Hard for our cafe stop. The Captain's Table has mixed reviews but has proven fine in the past for a coffee and cake stop. Bucklers Hard itself is an old shipbuilding village by the Beaulieu river and is worth a quick explore. It's then only a few miles back to Lyndhurst. 36 miles in total. |
