Chairman’s Newsletter – September 2021

Posted on September 30th, 2021

Hello everyone

The Tuesday evening programme finished very strongly in glorious weather – so strongly in fact that some enterprising ride leaders are carrying on for a few more weeks with some early start Tuesday evening rides. Off-road of course continues anyway into the autumn. It was really great to be able to have at least one pub night at the end of August and the Fox at Denchworth did a brilliant job of accommodating us all in their marquee. And now we are in that strange time which happens every year when the nights suddenly draw in and we are reminded that autumn is around the corner.

A few things for you to note:

The Women’s Tour of Britain – Monday 4th October
This professional stage race came through Wantage in 2019 and this year the first stage is entirely in Oxfordshire, starting in Bicester and finishing in Banbury. The route goes into Oxford and out again via Abingdon and Eynsham and it will be a great spectacle. Full details here, and we have a club ride going out to cheer them on at around lunchtime on that day – full details on the website.

Club Social Evening – also Monday 4th October
As if watching the Tour wasn’t enough for one day, that same evening we have our autumn social event at the Challow Cricket Club. There is a full bar there and for those who want to eat there as well we are going to order in meals from Millbrook Fish and Chips in Grove. Pre-ordering for the food is necessary and full details are on the website. This is an opportunity for us to get together socially, to see what people look like in normal clothes and to eat and drink together. There will also be a short update reflecting on the season so far and discussing plans for the future.

Virtual Turbo sessions
For those who are new to the club, we have generally put on a series of group turbo training sessions in the winter months, to supplement the weekend rides. Last year we had to innovate and the idea emerged of virtual sessions where people joined on their turbo trainers from home via Zoom. This year we have decided to carry on with that idea for now and the first block of sessions kicks off on Tuesday 5th October. Many thanks to Karen T for coordinating.

Please note that the full ride programme is now up on the website right through the winter and up to March next year. Please get your diaries out and think about which rides you might like to lead or join.

Happy riding!

Best regards
John
