Chairman’s Newsletter – February 2025

Posted on February 16th, 2025

Hello everyone

After some very challenging weather for cycling to start the year, perhaps we are seeing a few hints of spring in the weather forecast now – let’s hope so! A few things to bring to your attention:

Results from White Horse Cycle Challenge and Mince Pie Rides fundraising
Despite the challenging weather back in December as well, I am delighted to say that your generosity in giving to Whizz Kidz has meant that we have smashed the £1,000 target for these events and the total is now £1,124. We are really grateful to everyone who supported this whether through helping, riding and/or giving. A really great effort.

Date for the diary – AGM on Wednesday 30th April at Grove Rugby Club
As many of you know, our club year runs from 1st April to 31st March, so we have about six weeks left of the current year. At a recent committee meeting we set the date for the AGM to be Wednesday 30th April at Grove Rugby Club. We will be offering a fish and chips supper and the timing will be 7pm to eat and 7.45 for the business to begin. The bar will be open. We hope to see as many of you as possible as we look back at the 2024-25 year, look forward to 2025-26 and also celebrate our two annual club prizes for Best Newcomer and Best Club Person. More details to follow.

Ride Leaders
It can’t be said often enough that we are only able to operate as club, putting on so many glorious and different rides, because of our dedicated and entirely wonderful ride leaders. Just a quick reminder to that group of our Ride Leaders Meeting this coming Wednesday, 19th February, 7pm at Grove Rugby Club. This is where we will be finalising the rides programme for the spring and summer and allocating rides to leaders. It has been great to see some new leaders joining in the fun in the last few months and we are always keen to welcome more of you, so if you are interested in this role then please contact Katherine at rides@cyclingukwantage.org.uk. We offer training and mentoring.

Committee changes
One of the main formal parts of the AGM is the election of the club committee for the new year. As most of you will know, I announced at the last AGM that this would be my last year as the Chair of the club and so I will be stepping down from that role and from the committee with effect from the upcoming AGM. It has been an honour and a delight to lead the club for the last 15 years and I look forward to continuing as a ride leader and a member. Roger Postbeschild has agreed to put himself forward as Chair and we have a few other committee changes to propose as well. All will be revealed when we formally propose the new committee nominations leading up to the AGM.

That’s enough for now – let’s hang on to the tantalising prospect of possible double digit temperatures in the coming weeks and hope for some good spring rides!

Best regards
John
