Hello everyone
What an amazing and perfect Bank Holiday weekend! I hope you are enjoying it, with perhaps a bit of cycling involved…
I wanted to give you an update on the new CTC Wantage season. I think it’s fair to say that we are busy! We had been wondering in the Committee whether we might see an increase in interest on the back of the Olympics and the Tour de France last year – I think we have! I suspect the Giro d’Italia is only making it worse…
Having restarted our Tuesday night rides on 9th April, here are the numbers so far:
Apr 9th – 3 rides, 23 riders.
Apr 16th – 3 rides, 34 riders.
Apr 23rd – 5 rides, 40 riders.
Apr 30th – 4 rides, 45 riders.
We have also seen at least 10 new riders with us for the first time in the last month.
Whilst this is very exciting, it is also giving us some slight headaches in terms of logistics.
I am very conscious of our social responsibilities to other users of the Millbrook parking area and to other road users as we wend our way out of Grove and Wantage. Therefore please be aware and be courteous and please also follow the instructions of ride leaders, especially at the start of the rides.
As you know, we have kicked off a new series of 4* rides once a month, and the first one of these was a success. However, we have realised that we need to cater for all our members in the right way so we do need to keep the 3* rides at a sensible level, and we will be trying hard to stick to our published speeds and distances as we go on through the summer. We may also have to experiment with splitting rides up if numbers continue to increase. Again, please bear with us and keep in mind the basic courtesies and etiquette that we want the club to be known for.
As a result of all this, we are getting a little short of ride leaders. If any of you would like to take on this responsibility from time to time and are not presently on the list, please let me or John Talbot know.
See you out in the sunshine soon!
John Tranter
