I am currently limiting the numbers to ten, and a couple of early birds have already contacted me, so get your bids in early! Email, or text on 07875 456521 Please note revised start time of 0900. A reprise of my touring ride down into Hampshire, with lunch at the garden centre in Kings Worthy. This is a full day (almost 110km, and over 1,000m of climbing) at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders, but well within the capability of most strong 2* and all 3* riders. The weather at least should be a tad warmer than the previous iteration which was run in January and suffered ice showers! The ride starts at the Base Café in the Greenham Industrial Park on the south side of Greenham Common, just off the A339 to Basingstoke. |

We met as planned near the cafe in Greenham, with parking courtesy of Sharon B's company. The route took us south east towards Basingstoke, via leafy lanes, a bit of gravel (and a bridge bypassing a deep ford), and lots of snoopy up and down. Coffee was consumed at the excellent "Jolly Olly's" café in East Oakley, accompanied by cakes and some pork-related rolls. In sunshine with occasional clouds we then moved south-south-west towards Winchester, with the idyl spoiled only by the top-dressing of loose chipping along a couple of the roads. Smack on time at 1230 we arrived at Cobbs Farm Shop in Headbourne Worthy for lunch. Here the gods smiled on us, as the only significant rain of the day (and it was torrential for a brief period) passed through while we ate under an impressive garden awning. Post-lunch it was uphill to start (isn't it always) before following the beautiful valley of the River Test as far as St Mary Bourne. The big hill to Ashampstead was then disposed of, before dropping down towards Highclere where Andy suffered the only puncture of the day thanks to all the gravel that had been washed onto the roads. After a bit more up and down (quite a bit, actually) we arrived back at the start with weary legs but a great sense of achievement. Well done to all concerned, and thanks to Andy for being such a stoic sweeper throughout the day. | ||
