Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Tonight we'll be heading to Ginge and West Hendred, with a few climbs on the way, but also two long descents to enjoy. Out via Charlton and Sustrans route 544 through Lockinge, we'll climb gradually on this lovely back route to Ginge. After a rest, we'll enjoy a sweeping descent into West Hendred and continue through the village to the A417. There will be about 1 mile of main road back to Ardington, where we will tour through the village and below the Millenium Stones. After a climb back up to the A417, we'll enjoy our second fast descent down into the Vale past Lains Barn and back to Grove via Grove Park Drive. A round trip of about 12 miles, but all taken at a leisurely pace. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Riders:Brian HipwellCaroline Talboys Edith Hipwell Joy Arthur Steve Swanton Susan Holdroyd Riders = 6 Weather:Report:6 riders on the 1* ride this evening and it was good to see Susan back out on her bike.We followed the route as planned, using the back roads through Charlton and Cooper's Lane to cut through to Charlton Road on our way to the start of the Sustrans Route on Larkhill. We stopped by the fire engine in Lockinge and then again at Ginge en route to West Hendred. The final ascent to the crest of the hill before the sweeping descent into West Hendred always seems further than I remember it. But the reward is the great view and a great descent. Fortunately, the traffic on the A417 was relatively light and we soon turned off into the quieter surroundings of Ardington. After touring through the village, everyone managed the climb up to the Lains Barn crossroads - good practice at using the lower gears. Here Brian and Edith turned down the main road to Wantage, while the rest of us enjoyed our second long descent into the Vale. Back in Grove at 8:05pm after an enjoyable ride. Thanks everyone. | ||
