Hungerford Re-explored | 3* |
---|
Leader:Chris Walters |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Hungerford Town Hall |
Description:A decidedly lumpy 3* ride to the South of Hungerford.Classic lumps to be climbed include Walbury Hill from Faccombe, Combe Gibbett, and Linkenholt, before heading to Crofton Pumping Station for lunch. After lunch we head over to Pewsey for the classic Alton Barnes climb and down to Marlborough for a much flatter return to Hungerford; possibility of afternoon tea in Marlborough or Ramsbury. 105km and 1100+m of climbing - although we will wait while everyone climbs the hills, please join this ride if you are sure of your climbing ability on a long ride. Let me know if you're planning to come so I can book tables for lunch - cutoff is 17:00, Wednesday 12th August please. Note that car parking in Hungerford is not free on a Saturday, which includes the pay-and-display all up the main street. I suggest you either park at the station car park at the weekend daily rate of £1.50, or find discreet off-street parking and share lifts wherever possible. 11:00 14/08/2015 Update: Weather looking OK, so the ride is definitely on Please note, this week's rain will wash flint into the lanes - please ensure you have good tyres on your bike in good condition, and the means to repair (m)any of the p-things! |

Riders:Alan GaleChris Walters David Smith Hugo Pile Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Ken Pelton Louis Hall Nick Dunton Nick Stokell Phil Stubbings Richard Pethybridge Ursula Hallam Riders = 13 Weather:Report:13 is a good number for an "away" ride, even if it's not far away, and especially when the ride is declared to be "lumpy"!Nice to see Hugo out again, and decked out in a shiny new helmet (the floppy hat days are gone). After a little diversion in the Inkpen area, we added David and Ursula to the ranks of grimpeurs, for what was to be quite a strenuous morning, ascending Walbury, Combe and Linkenholt hills before arriving bang on time at Crofton for a very leisurely lunch. Jon and Karen headed back home and we made use of the flatter terrain to up the pace down to Pewsey, then up the Alton Barnes climb and down into Marlborough, where we lost Ken twice, the second time permanently. A delightful potter back to Hungerford along the Ax and Kennet valleys was only punctuated by a tea and cake stop at Cafe Bella in Ramsbury, where the wasps entertained. | ||
