Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. This is a re-run of last year's special route into the centre of Oxford. A steady pace through Charney Bassett, Appleton and Cumnor, down the hill to Botley. Then the cunning car-free entry to Oxford via bike tracks and beautiful river sides (suitable for all bikes). Private venue tea stop courtesy of St Cross College (with catering from the fine cafes of St Giles). Then along the river path to Iffley, Kennington and back via Sunningwell and Fyfield. 40 miles - an easy but interesting 3* ride, with easy terrain - suitable for 2* riders as well. Don't miss this one! |

A good group gathered, and a particular welcome to April on her first ride with us.We had an unexpected headwind to Cumnor, but finally dropped into the Thames Valley and enjoyed the back tracks and river side entry to Oxford. NCN5 - the allegedly major national cycle route through the centre of this great cycling city was, as usual, deeply disappointing and chaotic! But we made it to the oasis of calm at St Cross College and the fine cafes of St Giles, so all was well for the tea stop. We headed out of town via Broad St, Turl St and St Aldates and along the river - enjoying the sight of some enthusiastic 8's practicing going on. As time was wearing on, we split into smaller groups but we all got back safely to Grove. Well done to April on by far her longest ride to date! Thanks to all for a fun ride. | ||
