Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. Relatively hilly 74 km ride visiting the Snelsmore Common and the "ends" of Oxfordshire and Berkshire (i.e. Lands End and Worlds End).Usual route to Lambourn via Letcombe and Hackpen Hill is followed by the valley road to Boxford where we take the leafy lanes through Snelsmore Common, Curridge to a tea stop at Hilliers GC at Hermitage (43 km). The return is via Oare, Worlds End, Beedon, Stanmore, the Ilsleys, Farnborough, followed by the ubiquitous plunge down Chain Hill. |

Riders:David SmithHugh Falkner John Groves Louis Hall Nick Stokell Olivia Pile Ursula Hallam Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A pleasant loop to the South enjoyed by a group of 3* regulars plus Olivia on her first ride with SPDs (which might have led to some entertaining moments, but didn’t!). David and Ursula had already ridden the return route in the morning and experienced a heavy shower, but we were luckier. The afternoon was dry and increasingly warm with sunny spells. After following one of my favourite stretches of local roads from Boxford to Hermitage, we successfully circumnavigated the garden centre and found the new cafĂ©. Apple pie proved popular but some of us demanded custard with it which took a little while. David and Ursula departed back towards Newbury and the depleted group enjoyed fine views on the quiet lanes back through Beedon and Stanmore, before battling a headwind up to Farnborough. The increasing cross wind necessitated a bit of care on the descent of Chain Hill. Thank you to everyone for a very enjoyable ride and for making the effort to keep together and achieve the planned pace of 13 mph – it was quite a long, hilly ride for an afternoon ride (though not 930 m as RwGPS would have us believe – more like 800 m!). | ||
