Tuesday Evening 3* Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Andy Pixton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. I've chosen this route to take advantage of a fairly quiet A338, due to the road's closure in Wantage. We'll head out to Lambourn, via Denchworth and Childrey, then across to Great Shefford, and back to Grove via the A338. The light quality is forecast to be good, but please bring lights, in case any delays take us into the twilight zone! |

Having briefly considered splitting the ride into two groups, we set off as one, with ride leader happy that everyone knew how far we were going, and how long we had to do it in. We welcomed two new riders, Arthur and Kirsten; Arthur out with dad Richard, on a rare non-off-road ride with the club. Kirsten had seen our conspicuous club shirts at Ride London a few weeks ago and made contact with our Chairman at the event, reasoning there couldn't be more than one Wantage, could there? We avoided Grove and Wantage on the way out, taking a route through Denchworth and Childrey to Hackpen Hill. If we weren't warmed up already, we certainly were by the time we reassembled at Sparsholt Firs, ready for a lovely steady descent into Lambourn. A short stop outside the church and we embarked on the undulating route to Great Shefford. After a diversion through East Garston itself, to avoid the poor surface on the main road, we paused briefly in Great Shefford, before the long climb back up to The Ridgeway. The road was much quieter than usual, as expected. The ascent stretched the ride out a little, but we regrouped at the top. As we began the descent of Manor Road the setting sun presented itself as a bright orange semi-circle on the horizon. It was noticeably colder now. Many riders peeled off for home in different directions, at the bottom of the hill, leaving less than half of us to return to Old Mill Hall. In spite of the large numbers, making for a less than compact group at times, we were back before dark. Thanks to all who came along, particularly to Dave for making sure no-one dropped off the back. | ||
