And then I remembered a ride my sister had taken me on a few months ago. She knew it as Henk's Ride and we managed to piece it together. Henk a former member of the club who died a few years ago was renowned for his rides apparently and this was one that Angela loves.14 turned up in a busy market place, Andy agreed to sweep (well he mentioned sweeping, that's volunteering isn't it ) And we proceeded to have a very mellow, social ride. The stronger riders were patient with those of us slow up the hills. The countryside was beautiful. The weather windy but not too windy and the right temperature for a bike ride. The Tuti Pole were very organised and we were all sorted quickly, the consensus being that the ice creams were nicer than the cream teas!! Brian knew the route extremely well and saved us from a couple of wrong turnings and an unnecessary hill. He also showed us an historic Cycling Touring Club metal sign on a pretty cottage in the middle of nowhere. As we were paused admiring it, the owners came out and chatted to us. Both former cyclists, they'd bought the sign at auction and it had been on their house for a couple of decades. The lanes to Hungerford from Eastbury, the ride across the Common and the less familiar roads to Brightwalton were all highlights of the ride. Definitely some areas to explore further. Thank you all for being such a great group to lead and for creating a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon. | ||
