Oxfordshire Century Ride 3*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
8:00 am
Start Location:
Wallingford Market Place
Description:
20/6 As well as the century, we will be running a 50-mile option led by Robin Tucker from Wallingford to coffee and back by a different route: Wallingford 50. If you would like to ride the 50 or 100, please let Steve know by 8pm Thursday 22 June.

An opportunity to ride 100 miles taking in some less familiar territory in West Berkshire and North Hampshire (and we'll just touch Wiltshire too). We'll follow a similar route to the 2014 Centry and will maintain a steady pace of 12-13mph. The main stops and approximate timings are:

Start: Wallingford Market Place 8am (prompt please)
Coffee/breakfast: Mulberry & Thyme restaurant, Hilliers Garden Centre, Hermitage (28 miles) 10:30-11:15
Lunch: Yew Tree Cafe (garden centre), Ball Hill (51 miles) 13:15-14:15 (we have been asked to pre-order)
Tea and cake: Chez Swanton, Grove (78 miles) 16:30-17:15
End: Wallingford (101 miles) 19:00-19:15

The ride will start from the Market Place opposite the Tourist Information office. The nearby Goldsmiths Lane long-stay car park (OX10 0DS) is free on Sundays.

The plan is to follow a clockwise route through the Chilterns, dropping down to the Thames at Pangbourne and following the Pang Valley up to Hermitage. We'll ride around Thatcham, down to Kingsclere and cycle west along the foot of Watership Down and the North Downs to Highclere and Ball Hill. After lunch we'll continue westwards to Hungerford and Chilton Foliat before returning to Oxfordshire by way of Lambourn. From Grove, the last stretch is across the Vale via East Hendred, Sutton Courtenay and the Moretons. Be prepared for a long and demanding day in the saddle and something approaching 1600m of ups and downs.

Please let Steve know in advance if you are interested in coming to aid with planning refreshments and for pre-ordering lunch. Please let us know if you have any particular dietary requirements.

Weather:
sunny intervalswindy (fine)
Report:
15 riders completed the 2017 edition of the Oxfordshire Century ride, riding into Wallingford in glorious evening sunshine. It had been a tough day but everyone managed well and we finished strongly together as a group. Well done to Karl, Sharon and Marion on completing their first 100. This year everything went well, no punctures, and excellent refreshment stops. The temperature was very pleasant too and apart from a nagging westerly either side of lunch, riding conditions were ideal. All in all it made for a great day on the bike. Particular thanks to Carin and Lorna for providing a superb and much welcome spread for tea., to John and Robin for helping with leading duties and to Peter and Patrick (from Wallingford) for sweeping all day.
I will post a fuller report and a few pictures over the next few days...
