The Bruffells' puncture on the hill gave everyone ample time to get their breath back while the 'fixed-gear three' (Neil, Pat, and Kevin) got a headstart on the next stage. After a downhill run south on the main road we turned off by the monument at Woolley Down onto quieter roads through Chaddleworth, Leckhampstead, Egypt, and Peasemore to Lilley. Half the group headed straight back along the B4494 via California to Wantage while the remaining eight riders went via West Ilsley and Farnborough before the final descent down Chain Hill into Wantage. The Museum served us excellent tea and cakes and afterwards most riders headed off home straight from there. The total round trip distance from Grove was 30 miles, including plenty of hills.David N. | ||
