Regular Wantage Ride - OXFORD SPECIAL | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.NB: start at Old Mill Hall, Grove. A re-run of a classic all day Oxford ride, this is a fairly gentle ride, only really designated 3* by the total distance (around 90km / 57 miles). We will go out via Hanney, Steventon & Sutton Courtenay to Long Wittenham, then cross the Thames at Clifton Hampden and go through the Baldons to Garsington and Wheatley. Then a super cunning cut through to Shotover and Headington for lunch at the Butchers Arms pub. Suitably refreshed, we pass the house with a shark in the roof and drop down Headington Hill right into the heart of Oxford for a bit of light tourism / tourist dodging. Then we head north to Wolvercote, round Port Meadow to Botley and Cumnor, followed by a gentle run home via Fyfield and Standford in the Vale (with a potential shop stop if, for example, ice creams are called for by then). |

We enjoyed being pushed along by the tailwind all the way to Garsington, got the first hill there out of the way and then enjoyed the views from the ridge road along to Wheatley. The big climb up Old Road was undeniably testing, but worth it for the remarkable link through the bridleway at the top provides to Shotover Park. From there it was a quick zoom down into Headington for an excellent lunch stop at the Butchers Arms.Suitably fortified, we goggled at the great shark and then enjoyed the big descent into Oxford proper. Touristic opportunities followed as we wound through the centre, including photo bombing some wedding photos and getting tangled up in the Little Clarendon Street street fair. We were soon traversing Port Meadow and conquering Cumnor Hill, the final climb of the day. Then it was just a niggling headwind section back - by mutual consent we allowed ourselves a short cut over the footbridge to Southmoor and home via Charney Bassett. Thanks to all for a grand day out! | ||
