Daytime 1* Thursday Family Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:Stephanie Haddrell |
Start Time:10:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Social Family ride of approx 14 miles. This ride is planned for for young riders and their parents/guardians, we are heading out to Stanford in the Vale, and whilst the ride is slightly longer, it is very flat and within the capabilities of those who have been out over the summer. There will be experienced riders on hand to support and deal with any mechanical problems. We will take the ride nice and slowly and stop regularly to ensure everyone is happy. There will be a stop in Stanford for refreshments either, on the green or the cafe. Please meet at Old Mill Hall Grove at 10.15am to allow time to collect consent forms and check safety. Please check website on the morning of the ride if the weather is poor as it may be cancelled or the start time changed. |

We were delighted to be joined by Jude, Lizzie, Josh and Ellie for their second family ride of the season, especially as they had encountered a puncture before leaving. Well done Josh for saving the day and fixing Ellie's puncture! It looks like we could have a secondary family mechanic in our midst! We also welcomed Joanne, Graham and Thomas for their first ride out as a family, as well as Tim. We took the usual 1* route out towards Denchworth and as we approached the bridge were warned of traffic works. We were delighted as we approached the village to see that they were filling some of the notorious potholes. We had a brief stop having descended the bridge to check all were ok and It was clear that the newcomers were coping well. Our Chairman John was suitably impressed with Ellie's acceleration, and ability to climb the bridge; little did he know that the first ride involved some serious hill training! From Denchworth we headed to Charney Bassett with the group naturally splitting; the first group setting a slightly faster pace, mainly to keep up with Josh! Thomas was quite happy with this, and Lizzie was also perfectly comfortable cruising and talking, in spite of having a sore finger, great job Lizzie. We stopped at the village green in Charney for a quick drink and snack and to catch our breath. It was lovely to see the village pub adorned with beautiful colourful hanging baskets. From here we headed out towards Buckland along a windy road which was also into the wind. Not deterred, all continued comfortably along their way chatting and taking note of the lovely countryside; who spied the kestrel and the red kites? We stopped just short of the crossroads to re-group before turning left towards Hatford and on to Stanford in the Vale cafe for a very well earned coffee/ice cream/cake. It was also a super opportunity to catch up with other riders and to fill our newcomers in on club rides etc. As we left the village we braved the Wantage/ Faringdon road for a short stretch before turning left into Park Lane. This is a busy road which we only touch on for short spells, and the youngsters coped admirably, maintaining their line and pace as cars passed. Well done! As we turned into Park Lane it felt like we were home and dry, Ellie at this point was fuelled by ice cream and led the pack, for much of the return journey via Denchworth. It was disappointing to note that the roadworks hadn't progressed to fix the T junction potholes. In all a lovely morning with great company. Particular thanks to our regular riders Des, Roger, Lizzie, and David Bridge, for their support and to John T for coming out on his day off. Special mention also to John G who made a guest appearance at the cafe. | ||
