Description:Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.A gentle loop around the vale with a tea stop at the Bay Tree Cafe in Wantage towards the end of the ride. We'll have one short section along the A417 before turning right to West Challow and then will make use of two tarmacked bridleways with one short potholed section into East Challow. Total distance about 17 miles, but there is a 10-mile option back to Grove for those that would like the opportunity of a shorter ride. Lights recommended. |

Although flood waters had subsided, there was still a lot of water about and muddy puddles/potholes to avoid.We followed the route as planned stopping occasionally in the warmth of the sun for a breather and chat (it was decidedly cool in the shade). We enjoyed the sweeping views of the vale and Ridgeway from the top of the Circourt Road railway bridge and later from the track between Childrey and East Challow. At East Challow, several riders decided to head for home and two peeled off in Wantage. So 8 of us stopped for tea in the Bay Tree cafe, where we were joined by the rest of the Legate family. The cream tea with lemon drizzle scones and lemon curd was a new find. On leaving the cafe, the air was markedly colder and the back route through Foliat Drive was new to some. 4 of us made it back to OMH just after sunset.
